254669 2004-07-23 10:57:00 I had to reformat. So when I went to play Gin Rummy I needed Java.
I downloaded Java Web Start (has a little coffee cup) but now I find the cards are way too small. What Java programme should I download.
Tried to delete it but it gave me a warning about deleting it from the system - scary for a newbie.

Running XP Home Edition

Thanks

254670 2004-07-23 11:50:00 Sherilee, I found when I got XP, that it runs two lots of java, and the one with the coffee cup is called sun java, I think from memory, and in a lot of games, I had to disable sun java to get the right one to play. Hope this helps. Check out your help in IE for 'sun java' and it told me there where to disable, and if that does'nt work, you just reverse the process to turn it back on. Can't check at the moment, as I am using firefox, and it isn't in the same place as I found it in IE. Good luck. supergran (108)
254671 2004-07-23 22:41:00 go to internetr optoins / advanced untick sun java and tick jit compiler under microsoft VM.

just be aware you need to have microsoft java installed (comes with SP1 which you should have loaded). make sure all your windows updates are done as the old MS java is highly expoited.

personally i would stick to sun java :)

254672 2004-07-24 09:49:00 Sun Java isn't always good for playing games in msn and yahoo, which is why I disabled it in the first place. But since I have been using Firefox, I have found most games don't work anyway, so obviously I did something wrong, or haven't installed something to make firefox and XP work with those games. I used to be able to access far more games running IE. supergran (108)

A lot of games require ActiveX in order to run which Firefox, Mozilla and Opera do not have. You need to continue using Internet Explorer in order to play those types of games.

254674 2004-07-24 10:01:00 non-MS browsers require non-MS java (eg sun java). there may be other browser issues as some sites are designed not to work on non-MS browsers. tweak'e (174)
254675 2004-07-24 10:06:00 Thanks for the info guys, and sometimes I do go back to IE just to play games, but it is getting less and less, and I just don't trust it anymore, and love firefox, as it is far quicker at loading pages most of the time. supergran (108)
