255043 2004-07-25 23:06:00 Microsoft will be creating a CD of Win XP SP2 which is FREE specifically aimed at dialup modem users. I recently loaded a new HDD and had ordered XP SP1a from Microsoft (NZ) which took about 3 weeks to arrive but at least it saves a massive download via dialup modem!! Therefore wait for the release in August and contact Microsoft NZ and order the CD.
I have heard that the updates could be 170MB plus!!!

255044 2004-07-25 23:32:00 Both the new Windows Update software and the beta service pack 2 are now working.

I rebooted and left the thing to do its job automatically and it happily completed the part complete download without operator interference.

When you install the service pack it rather agressively takes over security of your computer, covering automatic updates, firewall, and virus protection. It claimed that I did not have a firewall or anti virus software installed and operating (wrong on both counts) and then takes over. I had to turn off the default settings to stop any conflict with my current software. I'm not sure why it did not detect the protection I have on my computer.

Anyway, everything is now working fine. I have set up automatic updates to notify me but not to download and install automatically so I can choose which ones I want to install - the Fred Langa article referred to by Murray P above was helpful in sorting out what I wanted to do. Thanks Murray :-)

I can't see any changes derived from service pack 2 except for a number of new control panels - Security Centre, Windows Firewall, Network Setup Wizard, and Wireless Network Setup Wizard. Not sure about the latter two; as my network (wireless and hard wired) is working fine, I don't intend to mess with the wizards...

The installation of service pack 2 puts an icon on your desktop so you can report a bug. I followed that up to report the non detection of firewall and anti virus, but you can only report a bug if you have a .Net passport or if you are a Microsoft employee. Seeing neither of those apply to me, I now have one less icon on my desktop and Microsoft are "deprived" of my probably unnecessary bug report.
