2004-07-24 01:09:00 512MB DDR333. I've stripped out virtually every background process/service that I can, and that seems to help. I'm pretty sure I have a 400watt psu, although it might be 450 - I'll find out if it makes a difference. I do have 2 optical drives, so that might suck some power. I'd probably just get a plain vanilla 6800. SpiderVenom (1412)
2004-07-24 01:13:00 with a measly 2.4 p4 i think it will be a waste of $$$$. simply put a cheaper card will run just as fast. as much as i love kick ass hardware you will be better off saving a few dollars. the hard part is working out when the cpu becomes the limiting factor instead of the vid card. with the $$$ saved you might be able to get a cpu or ram upgrade (not to mention psu upgrade).

i don't know what specs far cry requires or if its one of those games that no matter how good the system it still runs crappy. i have a game here which has a recommended spec ot p3 800 32 meg vid card etc and still runs like crap on a 1.4 ghz atho gf3.

2004-07-24 01:24:00 It's hard to imagine finding a cheaper card that will run just as fast... the geforce 6800 is a performance jump in the way that the radeon 9700 was... besides, I'm shopping for Christmas here, and they'll probably be down to $500 by then (Ascent's selling a 6800 for about $710 right now)... I want to get one last upgrade before I settle in to wait for a new PC. And I just need more GPU grunt. As I said, I can OC my cpu to 3 GHz on far cry, and it does a stunning nothing. If I overclock my gpu, it gains about 15-20 FPS. Although it's still a bit slow on high detail settings. SpiderVenom (1412)
2004-07-24 01:44:00 in that case a the base model gf6800 may be the way to go. i certainly wouldn't buy the ultra ver, the rest of your sytem won't run quick enough. tweak'e (174)
2004-07-24 02:12:00 Yeah... I figured an ultra would be overkill (and too expensive besides, not to mention power draw O_o). And I also wanted a card with shader 3.0 support, as I'm writing 3d code/shader code as a little hobby. Thanks for all your help :) SpiderVenom (1412)
