26.07.2004
By PAUL BRISLEN

Telecom has made significant changes to its proposed broadband wholesale plan, but has retained its controversial "churn fee".

The "unbundled bitstream service" comes in response to the Telecommunications Commissioner's call for a regulated broadband service.

The wholesale plan covers only one product, an entry-level 256kbps service.

But Telecom plans to introduce a 512kbps service early next year.

Telecom has been talking to most New Zealand internet service providers since early June.

Hmm, I wonder IF New Zealand will get 512kbps service next year?!

255435 2004-07-26 04:24:00 Telecom to Ditch Jetstream Starter (www.nzherald.co.nz). Thought I'd add this to the mix Stu.

255437 2004-07-26 05:25:00 I better add this to the mix as well

It looks like they'reupgrading their core network too (www.stuff.co.nz).

255438 2004-07-26 09:31:00 I'm really disappointed that Telecom are doing this and I'm just glad that I'm moving to Wired Country. I know however that eventually I'll probably be forced back on to the telecom network when we move from here in a couple of years :( segfault (655)
255439 2004-07-26 09:40:00 Just to make it clear, my post was in reply to the article about Telecom killing the 128k jetstart plans. segfault (655)
255440 2004-07-26 11:09:00 So at the moment with 128K via Paradise which is what I'm on, usage is measured by Paradise. In migrating to 256k Jetsurf the Telecom usage meter comes into play, there are stories that the two meters dont read the same with the Telecom measure being somewhat or considerably higher than the ISP usage measures.

Anyone have any experience of this, ie a sudden jump in apparent usage after having moved to 256k Jetsurf?

Yep. You can almost be assiured that it will jump by about 4 times the usage at least. An example of my last usage according to Paradise

May 181MB 26 May - 22 Jun
June 1549MB 23 Jun - 20 July
July 1175MB 21 July - 27 Jul

Now the dates are slightly out from the Jetstream usage but not far. Here is the Jetstream meter readings.

May 17833.20 MB 22 May - 21 Jun
June 5607.50 MB 22 Jun - 21 Jul
July 2336.68 MB 22 Jul - 27 Jul

Most months Paradise shows me at about 5-6GB usage but the Jetstream meter averages out at 20GB per month.

Nope, as before when we where on Jetstream starter according to my dad we where using 3 GB/month aprox & the first month (or was it the 2nd? ?:|) On Jetsurf we used just over 3 GB.

255443 2004-07-27 11:45:00 That's some huge increases from Big John. You're lucky they can't cap your speed until after september. If they could they'd be having a field day with ripping users off and releasing the load on their network by dropping half the users to 64k.

It would pay to check it for yourself. He might not have been counting National traffic, etc etc.
