255742 2004-07-27 09:08:00 First, thanks to all those kind folk who replied to my questions on Screen Settings the nice person who told me I was not old at 65, Thank you friend

No improvement I am sorry to say. I have been away for some time and did not have time to reply to your answers.

I have a bigger problem

I now find my machine is getting very slow.

When my first windows screen shows up, I have all these "Windows" symbols show up, they then slowly fill in to their programme.

Every second time on starting my machine, I now get w***ing messages saying that my machine has committed an indecency, and will now shut down.

What is going on?

I use Norton "all things" on a regular basis to check on and sort my computer

Is this a problem?

A "Senior" related reply is required.

( I have a rapidly growing feeling that (a) windows 98 is getting past it, and (b) an intense desire to dispose of both the ghastly person who owns Microsoft, and the dreadful women who runs Telecom.

Surely, there is a better world out there somewhere???????

255743 2004-07-27 11:15:00 I know this might be a dumb question, but do you run 'scan disk, and defrag? Defrag is what I usually use if said puter starts slowing down too much. And check for spy/adware. You will find lots of posts here regarding spyware, and programs to search for it. If it is spyware, it can be running stuff in the background that you don't know about, and slowing the system down. supergran (108)

255745 2004-07-27 13:12:00 Hi Pete

If you can expand on the warning messages a little would be great . When it comes to MS's indecency the gory details are a must I'm afraid, even if it just confirms that you are not alone in your misery .

Try a bit of cleanup maintenance as suggested . Start your computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key repeatedly right when windows is starting up (just after the POST beep and once the initial [very first] splash screen finishes . You may need a few goes to hit the sweet spot) you'll find yourself in a black screen with white text, choose Start Windows in Safe Mode (this starts the OS with just basic drivers for video, sound, etc, so things will look a bit clunky when you get to the desktop) .

Once windows has loaded up:

Go to My Computer > right click your hard disc drive (if more than one do them all) and choose properties > click Disk Cleanup button and select Temporary files, Internet cache (or IE cache), Recycle Bin (check there is nothing you want to keep in there like your thesis)click clean up and OK to confirm your selection .

Next go to the (still in disc properties) Tools tab and click on Scandisk > choose Automatically fix errors and Thorough > go away and settle into a good book .

When that is done click on Defragment my Hard Drive or Defragment Now button (or words like that) on the same Tools tab > go away and finish your book .

Repeat for any other physical hard drive listed in My Computer . By the way (BTW), note down the size of your hard drive and the free space available in the first properties tab before you do your cleanup and then after .

Reboot your PC (Start button > Shutdown > choose Restart in the drop down list > OK) and see if that has improved windows' performance any .

255746 2004-07-27 20:58:00 You may have a problem that occurs in Windows 98, the file that holds the icons that appear on your desktop is too small, because you may have increased the number of icons over the years.

This slows down the computer considerably at startup.

Unfortunately to increase the default size you need to be able to edit the Registry.

Anyway this is what has to be done:

1. Click Start, Run, type regedit, and press Enter.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer. Highlight this key in the left pane of your Registry editor.

3. Right click the right pane and choose New, String Value.

4. Rename the string value Max Cached Icons

5. Double click Max Cached Icons in the right pane and type the value 4096, and click OK.

(Taken from "More Windows 98 Secrets", Livingston & Straub)

If this is rather too difficult, see if you have a local friendly guru to help you.

255747 2004-07-27 23:38:00 In addition to Terry's advice, go to C:\windows and locate the file shelliconcache (note that it has no . xxx file extension) . It is normally a hidden file so you will have to set Explorer to "show hidden files" .

Delete this file, shut your computer down completely, then restart it . The desktop will appear slowly as Windows rebuilds a new icon file, and it may look like nothing has improved at all, but next time you boot the icons will appear very quickly . Very occasionally it takes a couple of reboots to get it right, but they must be full boots from off, not restarts .

Repeat this procedure any time the icons are slow to appear .

Works for W2K as well, so XP will probably be the same .

Cheers

255748 2004-07-28 01:40:00 I'd forgotten Billy's tip, that will help too, to speed up icon loading.

Murrays advice will help also, regular cleaning is quite important. Norton Utilities is fairly limited in this respect as it doesnt get rid of junk files, though it seems to do a reasonable job of Registry cleaning.

Then there is the adware junk already mentioned.

You know driving Windows 98 without regular maintenance is like driving a car without ever changing oil, filters, spark plugs, water, brake fluid, etc. Eventually the car will come to a stop.

Windows is just the same, it gets clogged and needs de-coking.

Easycleaner from Toniarts workwell as a freebie cleanup program:

EasyCleaner (personal.inet.fi)

Then there is another useful system file cleaner from Kevin Solway:

Clean System Directory (www.theabsolute.net)

This removes unused .dll files from the system directory.
