255726 2004-07-27 03:53:00 I want to partition the hard drive on a new computer running Windows XP, creating one partition (C:) for the O/S and other programs, and a second partition (D:) for my data files.
Is it possible to move Microsoft's "My Documents - Pictures - Music" folder to the D: drive and make this the default location for all new documents etc.

255727 2004-07-27 04:13:00 right click on "My Documents" on your desktop and then click on "properties" then "move" and put the new path in. falvrez (390)

if you do it this way then, in theory, all of the other software knows where to find "my docs" - I recently had a go at doing this when I installed a new HDD and then had some major problems (with the administration user account) so I had to put it all back and I only ended up only shifting the big stuff (music, photos, movies) and linked it via a new shortcut folder in the origianl folder.

255729 2004-07-27 04:49:00 It would be better to create a new "Documents" folder on the second partition for your data complete with subfolders of "Music", "Pictures", etc then perform the previous suggestion of directing the existing My Documents to the new Documents folder: after you right-click My Documents and choose Properties, browse to your new folder to obtain the correct location path but DO NOT allow it to move all the existing contents of My Documents to the new location. tommy (2826)
