256255 2004-07-28 18:59:00 I'm looking for a free program that will sort a very long list (2000+ names) and will also act as a search engine. ie. I enter a name and it brings up the names and details.
I know I can do this with Access, but that's realy overkill.

You can sort columns using this and use the find function.

agree plus XL will import varying types of data (e.g. if your list is a text file or in outlook) and it will handle lists up to 65000 items in length (2000 version anyway) BUT I reckon you could do it quicker in Access (the whole set set up and search)

256259 2004-07-28 22:07:00 The list I want to copy is in "Family Tree Maker". I have been playing with it this morning and it looks like I can not extract them from FTM unless I do it manualy, one at a time. The list I want can not be copied and pasted. And I can not even find them in a usable file. So it looks like "back to the drawing board. JJJJJ (528)
256260 2004-07-28 22:23:00 bugger....is FTM freeware off the internet? Does FTM have a support / FAQ page? You mentioned that you couldn't find anything in a useful file - some older software stores data (sometimes .dbf etc.) in separate files where the program is located - I take it you have checked this using a file manager tool? Does the program store the data locally or is this an ASP-type piece of software that is sourcing the data via the internet? Not much help I know but in the absence of this info, the previous recommendations were worthless. A piece of middleware or an add-on that allowed you to extract bulk data would be useful...not that I know of any for FTM - Google wasn't much help either. andrew93 (249)
256261 2004-07-28 22:33:00 No all the info is stored on my computer. I suspect what I am looking for is stored in several files named *.ctl. I can not find any way to open them. JJJJJ (528)

Family Tree Maker will have the ability to create GEDCOM files ( probably under File/Export.)

There is a program on the net which will allow Import of GEDCOM files into Excel. I haven't time to look for this at the moment as I have to go out, but will check on it for you this afternoon.

I know this will be a two step process but it beats the alternative.

256264 2004-07-28 23:37:00 I had a brief search of google, and found multiple free programs that would convert gedcom files to .csv files, (I believe excel can quite easily import these ) the key words I used were,
gedcom csv conversion
hope this helps
