256329 2004-07-29 01:22:00 Hey! Someone else already does this, and whilst I think it's a stupid idea it's still wrong of you to steal his thunder.

Shall I wait for you to start doing WFTWE threads as well?

256330 2004-07-29 01:24:00 Does it matter who does it?

What is important is that it gets done!

256331 2004-07-29 03:38:00 No problem here.
While I check about 9-9:30am and there was no new update I would probally not have checked again until late in the afternoon.
So the sooner it gets done the better, in fact if I remember I stole this updating offa someone else. :D

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

256332 2004-07-29 12:06:00 Hi Merlin NZ

No intention of stealing your thunder . Had been reading post on a spybot post re: some not being able to download it .

After checking it myself and it working OK, I then did an update on AVG and Adaware, and received a new one for AVG .

I posted a reply to that post saying mine worked okay and seeing no advice of the latest AVG, decided to put that in too while I was there .

I thought that this forum was a group of people wanting to help or needing help, a group effort . Merlin-nz, you are always there for everyone and a great example of what can be achieved on this forum .

Unfortunately, there is the 'odd' person who insists on showing his immature, childish side . A psychologist would have a ball sorting out his inability to share, integrate into groups, the 'only child' sydrome, every thing in its own little box etc .

So as not to ignite his perpetual hangups, I will do my downloads in silence .
regards, Marg

256334 2004-07-29 12:54:00 I didn't expect to get another AVG update so soon, so thanks for the heads up .

While I'm here the Spybot downloads sometimes return a bad checksum from the default download site (top site in the drop down list on the update window), click the list and choose another site, the aussie one seems to work most often .

256335 2004-07-29 13:14:00 Does AVG Free not allow for automatic checking and updating each and every time you log onto the internet?

I am just curious to know why Update notifications are being posted here.

I am using avast! on my PC which checks and updates itself automatically :)

256336 2004-07-29 13:27:00 Yes it does if you set it like that . I prefer it to check daily but not right on start up . Just about every internet capable programme these days has a setting to check for update at start up, if you allow them, they'll all be clammering to get online at the same time . As a rule I don't allow anything to communicate aotomatically except perhaps at a scheduled time but also try to check AV during the day sometime as well .

Also, no update or programme gets installed without giving it permission and a rule in the firewall, not having the firewall handling this function automatically can be a pain but it means you see exactly what is happening in your system and hopefully no trojan or worm is going to trick your AV with an update that disables it .

To clarify, Installshield, InstallWise, the MS installer, etc, never get a rule in the firewall which allows them to operate without an alert being given. Any programme that is altered or replaced on the PC throws up an alert from the firewall and in some cases Spybot. It is then manually permitted or denied.
