1367155 2014-02-08 07:58:00 For some time now I have been troubled with a repetitive message on my W7 Pro stating that rundll32.exe has closed, makes no difference to the performance. I removed rundll32.exe, then cleaned the registry with crap cleaner. The only program using rundll32.exe was Microsoft Picture viewer which seems to have gone AWOL. Windows is performing well and the absence of rundll32.exe does not seem to be noticed. Infact, the sound card which has always been weak seems to perform better. mzee (3324)

As the article says, this is a needed/required application in Windows, but if the file is in anywhere other than C:windows/system32 it can be a sign of malware/virus infections, do some full scans.

1367157 2014-02-09 06:48:00 I put rundll32.exe back into system32, and the nonsense started again. There is no other rundll32.exe anywhere. So- I removed it again and all is sweet. I can't help feeling that this file is a leftover from the past and probably no longer necessary in most cases.
I may copy rundll32.exe from another computer just in-case it is a corrupt file.

1367158 2014-02-09 07:01:00 When does the error come up?? On startup?? When you run any program? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1367159 2014-02-09 09:08:00 When does the error come up?? On startup?? When you run any program?

It usually comes up when browsing with Chrome, TradeMe, You Tube, or when working on websites with Web Realizer. It is random, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after an hour or more. After the error everything is normal. It only happens once per session, reboot or standby. I will try replacing the file tomorrow, with the help of Puppy Linux!

1367160 2014-02-09 23:22:00 rundll32.exe runs DLLs. Generally it is not rundll32 itself that is causing a problem, but a DLL that it is trying to load. Your problem likely lies somewhere else. rundll32.exe crashing is probably just the symptom. Agent_24 (57)
1367161 2014-02-09 23:36:00 Could be something like a toolbar or something that's installed (for whatever browser you're using) that's making it crash. What toolbars have you installed??

Does the same thing happen in windows explorer?? If it does, this can be caused by incompatible software / codecs

Post a HJT log so we can see whats in it / what's installed

1367162 2014-02-11 21:38:00 I hope it is fixed! The size of rundll32.exe in the Dell was 56kb, and in the Lenovo it is 44kb. I copied the Lenovo file into the Dell and so far there hasn't been a problem since. I guess that the problem file had some extra data in it or wasn't a genuine rundll32.exe mzee (3324)
1367163 2014-02-11 21:40:00 May have been a different version, or infected with a virus. If you still have the old one you could upload it to www.virustotal.com and see if anything turns up Agent_24 (57)
