1366740 2014-02-02 23:04:00 Avg keeps finding this threat - after "fixing" and rebooting it comes straight back.
Avg says that the active program is " C:\windows.0\System 32\svchost.exe".
Do I need svchost.exe?
And why do I have windows.0?
Running xp pro with no internet connection.

1366741 2014-02-03 00:01:00 In reverse --- svchost is needed, heres what it is: windows.microsoft.com (windows.microsoft.com) Lots of malware, infections also can run svchost.

The windows.0 is usually another install of windows on the same partition, often caused by repair installing or installing incorrectly, sometimes infections can also have a part in it. You have to check which Windows your OS is running from.

Number 20 may be of some help www.michaelstevenstech.com Before doing ANYTHING make sure you have a backup, do the wrong thing and you'll lose everything.

Even though the PC is not on the Internet if someone plugs in a USB drive ir CD/Dvd thats infected it can infect the PC as well.

1366742 2014-02-03 22:27:00 Thanks.
I'm wondering whether to just reformat that drive and do a complete new install of xp.
Hopefully that will fix things.
Any comments for or against would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Shaun
