1366534 2014-02-01 23:35:00 I am planning to upgrade my PC to a new MB, CPU, GPU, RAM, etc but HDDs

It is currently running Windows 8 (cheap $20 promo) and upgraded to Win8.1. Win 8.1 will be uninstalled from this machine when my new hardware arrive.

Questions:

1. Can I do a clean install of Win8 with same product key and the DVD I burnt, then upgrade to Win8.1

2. Will I have activation problems with MS?

3. Can I still use the Media Centre key (special promo offer)?

4. Or, I will have to buy a new copy of Win8?

Cheers

1366535 2014-02-02 01:00:00 Should work but you may have to ring the 0800 MS # to activate it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1366536 2014-02-02 01:01:00 1. Yes, no problems, sometimes it wont activate, there is a reg alteration that will allow you to do so, other times no worries, which leads on your next question:

2. You may have to call Microsoft and manually reactivate Windows 8 as it was licensed to the previous Motherboard. Have a read of the following pcsupport.about.com scroll down till you find in bold "I have Windows 8/8 Pro installed on my PC. If I replace the PC with another, can I install my copy of Windows 8 on my new PC as long as I remove it from the previous one?"
(then again it may simply activate without problems)

3. AFAIK you can as long as it was previously activated before the cut off time of Feb 2013

4. Shouldn't have to.

1366538 2014-02-04 19:20:00 After a second thought, just wondering whether I can just bring my OS HDD (with Win8.1 and all the programs) and connect it to my new MB? What are the chances?

If it works, will save me hips of time in setting it up all over again!

Will sys prep work in Win8.1?

Will sys prep work in Win8.1? Try it, see what happens.

What you can do is make an image of the drive, ( in-case things go pear shaped) put it in a safe place. What i'd do is make the image, drop that onto another drive to make sure it has worked as well - images are no good if they are corrupted (happens sometimes)

Attach the existing HDD - its either going to install OK and load new drivers or crash. Had this happen many times when fixing customers PC's, sometimes the hardware is to different and it simply wont play ball, other times it works.

What WILL happen though is it will say the hardware has been changed and needs to be reactivated, so you will have to call MS and manually do it. Be prepared to answer questions from the MS person.

Sysprep doesn't always work, had it a few times when sysprepping it gets part way through, then when reboots and an error appears, you cant go forward or backward - ya stuck :annoyed: Hence the suggestion about making an image first :)

1366540 2014-02-04 20:29:00 Thanks wainuitech. Have already made the image; and now waiting for all the hardware to arrive. bk T (215)
1366541 2014-02-04 20:41:00 Like WT says, it is worth trying the swapped-in drive method. A while ago I switched mobos on a Vista machine. I was very impressed at how the much maligned Vista handled it. It just quietly installed all the drivers it needed and just carried on.

Good luck.

1366542 2014-02-04 20:56:00 If for some reason it doesn't work, there is still a way, I have a customers drive here, W7, the motherboard blew, and theres a few things I need to get off teh drive and its a lot easier to get it if the drive is bootable. the Drive simply crashes on another board, I looked and found www.sevenforums.com It works a treat. I have the program on software I purchased a while back but never used it. wainuitech (129)
1366543 2014-02-05 00:44:00 Windows 8 is much better at this than previous windows versions, I swapped motherboards between my 2 PCs - one is a B75 and the other a H77. They both booted up fine but windows had to be reactivated. I swapped they keys over to match the boards and that worked too. All in all a very painless swap. You have your image so nothing to lose in trying it. dugimodo (138)
