1347163 2013-06-27 08:49:00 So! you get to retire etc. and life is great, time to do what you want to do and all the time in the world to do it, you're in control - hang on! your bladder has different ideas - sleepless nights seem to be a thing of the past, who's in control now? seems that peeing has a new meaning, where once we could drink all day and most of the night then enjoy an uninterrupted sleep, has changed - tried some variations e.g. no liquids from noon, the urge arrives around 4am - no liquids from breakfast, 8am, again around 4am - there's got to be a solution! any "serious" suggestions? jayal (1291)

1347169 2013-06-27 20:03:00 Only need to get up if SWMBO steals the blankets and I get cold, so long as I'm warm the urge isn't there to pee in the night gary67 (56)
1347170 2013-06-28 01:35:00 Had my prostate out 5 months ago, have found that a last cuppa at 7 or 8 at night, maybe have to get up once during the night.
Have discovered that going to bed straight after drinking beer is not a good idea.

1347171 2013-06-28 02:10:00 Yeah, the alcohol does tend to relax things. Driftwood (5551)
1347172 2013-06-28 04:14:00 Talked about it with lots of my contemporaries and ALL have the same issue. My prostate tests are fine (nurse said my PSA test result was the lowest she had ever seen), so it isn't that in my case.

I think it is a really bad idea to stop fluid intake during the day - dehydration is not a good idea, and the headaches are a killer. I don't have alcohol after 7pm at the latest, and one miserable small cup of caffeine free tea between 7 and 8. Actually a beer before dinner seems to be a good thing - it sets the waterworks off before you go to bed because it is a diuretic, and it seems to clear the pipes before bed. Getting up once a night isn't too bad.

Recent research has shown that the idea of sleeping for 8 hours was really only invented in the 19thC. Until then people tended to sleep for four hours, and then get up and do one or more of: have something to eat, talk, take a leak, meet up with the neighbours, have a bit of nooky. Then back to the land of nod for the rest of the night. The problem is with our expectations rather than a bodily need for a straight 8 hours sleep.
