1346772 2013-06-24 05:29:00 Ok you tech boffins - out of curiosity why the hell do some Internet sites have such long and complex login passwords.
Where we are currently staying this is the login password!

1346773 2013-06-24 05:34:00 Is that for the wireless? If so it's probably a WEP key, which believe it or not is actually a whole lot less secure than a simple 8 or 10 character word with WPA encryption. wratterus (105)

1346775 2013-06-24 05:45:00 No big surpise, it's for security. The longer a password the harder it is to crack, often they enforce a mixture of numbers, letters, capitals, lowercase, and special characters as well. The sad part is it's been stated that a simple nonsense phrase that is easily remembered is more secure than most of these ridiculously hard to remember passwords. Then again they probably don't want you to remember it. Example "one yellow cat" is harder to crack than "P@$sWorD_9!" by the simple fact that it's 14 characters long as opposed to 11. dugimodo (138)

1346778 2013-06-24 23:25:00 Its stupidity by someone who doesnt know any better.
Make the pass impossible to remember, & everyone will just write it on a bit of paper & stick that onto the screen . There's your security gone.

Seen it at sites with stupidly complex Win passwords, & also had forced password changes every 6 weeks. No one could remember their passwords , so everyone either wrote the password on scraps of paper or kept forgetting & had to ring IT to have the pass reset .

1346779 2013-06-25 00:38:00 Yeah pretty much. Use a combination of words.

Where do you think the crackers get their dictionary lists from?
