| 1346988 | 2013-07-04 09:45:00 | Well put it this way - I deal with everything from XP - W8 almost every day. After getting used to W8 and use it how its actually meant to be used, all previous versions seem so antiquated and slow in doing tasks. Do you think Windows 8 is faster than Win 7 and/or WinXP on a PC with the same specs or slower or no different? |

For general usage, opening programs (esp if a person uses the start menu) W8 is quicker. Example: once setup like I do, with the programs I may use all the time, putting them on the start screen is quicker to hit the windows key, click the tile - programs open. In XP, W7 click start, scroll through the list, open the folder, or locate the icon click it - Program opens. The start screen may have only a few icons. Generally overall though ( dont do gaming) I find earlier versions of Windows slower than W8 - Often I find when working on XP/ W7 I find myself going to do something and think oh crap old system - old ways of doing things. The search is FAR better in W8, that also applies to opening items like the control panel - W8, simply go to start screen type in Control - and click control panel - it opens, earlier versions you have to work through various menus. Its hard to explain really, but when W8 is setup to the persons needs, and its used for a while then go back to an older system, it feels so antiquated. The biggest problem with W8 is many people dont know how to clean up the start page, or use its functions. Thats the biggest muck up MS made - its here it is - you're on your own now. |

That's the biggest muck up MS made - its here it is - you're on your own now. That has always been the problem with Microsoft products - they delude themselves that it is all so intuitive that they don't need tutorial-type material, and when they do provide "help" it is usually in the form of answering questions that you haven't even asked. I did see a tile in the original Win8 marked Introduction or somesuch, but it has disappeared in 8.1. There is a tile marked "tips and tricks" or something, but it is just a placeholder atm. Maybe the final release will have a bit more useful stuff. | Tony (4941) | ||

How is that quicker than what I do with Win7 which is pin the program to the start menu and either click start or press the windows key & click the program?? ;) I only need to go to All Programs if there is an app I don't use regularly - which would probably take an age to find in a bunch of tiles :D |

Pfft, I hit the Windows key and start typing :p Well, I never really pinned anything to the Start menu. Had a fair bit pinned to the taskbar, which I still do in Windows 8. |

I did a back to back test the other month with my son, he was on his mothers W7 in the lounge, and myself on W8 also in the lounge and we opened various items when SWMBO went "Go", did various tasks, esp concerning ones a average user wouldn't do - each and every time W8 had the program or task open faster - My son can leave me for dead in speed doing tasks on a PC - to say he was annoyed would be putting it nicely. It doesn't mean you still cant pin to the taskbar or have desktop items if you wanted. As I also mentioned earlier its very hard to explain until you have actually set W8 as you like and tried it yourself for a few weeks and gotten used to it. Then go back to W7 and you would see what I mean ;) |

Great information, thanks. I don't do games either, just the usual internet, email, photo storage and editing and using Office programs. Being able to keep track of my files is very important to me and I struggle with that on my netbook with Win7, probably because I don't use it on a daily basis. I don't keep my files in My Documents on my WinXP PC and find it quite a mission to store them the same way on my netbook as I do on my main PC. I would rather avoid having to learn a completely different way to doing things on Win8 but I guess I don't really have a lot of choice when it comes to my next PC. :( |
