| 1348217 | 2013-07-09 20:45:00 | I've forgotten more titles than I can remember. I read a book a day for about 20 years, it's dropped off a lot now, about 4 - 8 a month now. Started with libraries, ran out of them pretty rapidly, found 2nd hand bookshops, ditto. Then there was one in Ponsonby, she let me out back one day (mainly cause I used to return a lot of them) and lo! A massive room full of SF. Read my way through that and then found the Old Book Seller. Moved into new, and then they stopped getting stock, so I had to open my own bookshop for a while. But you get pickier....I read them all once, now it's certain SF, mostly hard SF with a few exceptions. Maybe it's just years of reading stuff but seems like there's a lot of crap around these days: I get most here: bookzone.co.nz Never liked Fantsay so much but now there are such abominations as this: Queen of Wands (Special Circumstances): Ringo, John Soccer mom and demon fighter Barbara Everette has a problem. Barbara must track down the perpetrators and break the spell or Janea's soul will be forever lost on the astral plane. Oh, and if she can't break the spell, zombies will destroy all mankind. Meanwhile, Janea, a stripper and High Priestess of Freya when she isn't fighting demons, must contend with a spiritual journey of her own. Where to locate one's true inner essence? At a science fiction convention, of course. But when rescuers pursue Janea into her vision of a geeky alternate reality, we find this is one science fiction convention where the Guest of Honor could turn out to be Death Himself. I mean, WTF??!! Lets' mix fantasy, zombies, and whatever else you can think of that might be slightly trendy all in a big mess and call it a book. Geez. The weirdest one lately I really did like though is Outpost by Adam Baker. Weird because it's an End of World book, but a sort of everyone is now a sort of zombie - except it's not really a zombie, it's a nano thing.... But it was a great action book, no happy endings and quite desolate.....the remaining heroes? of the book are on an oil rig up in the arctic.... Quite dystopian...... |

| 1348222 | 2013-07-10 05:09:00 | I must start reading again, have read most of the books mentioned though. Churned through so many as a teenager the stories and titles are a big jumbled mess in my head. Amazing how often some B-grade movie has a very familiar plot though. When beastmaster came out all those years back it took me a while to realise the cheezy fantasy movie was adapted from a sci-fi book I'd read. Here's an book/ author I've been trying to remember - Aliens come to earth looking for their lost colony and discover Humans here instead, we immediately recognise them as ancestors of our kangaroos and reluctantly introduce them to the decendants of their long lost colony.. I can't remember the rest of it or even if it was any good but it's bugging me. |
