1347216 2013-06-28 04:10:00 So Auckland is in the sh1t again, and expects the rest of the country to bail them out, or build a rail system that only will be used by people in Auckland ? Yeah that'll work great  What about other cities that have transport problems ? Take wellington - not enough trains as it is, maintence is cut down to bare minimum, and some repairs only get done when absolutely necessary.

WhenI used to working the railway workshops, I can tell you now there used to be a regular maintenance programs, refurbishing units, locos etc, that's all gone now. You want to live in Auckland, and have a rail system - pay for it with Aucklands residents taxes - Hate to advise, but Auckland is NOT the whole of NZ.

Conversely, the tax take should be apportioned as well, then?

1347217 2013-06-28 04:25:00 Dunno why they don't just invest more in broadband infrastructure. As somebody who is working from home today, via a VDSL2 connection, if that sorta thing was more affordable then a lot of people wouldn't be on the roads at all! Chilling_Silence (9)
1347218 2013-06-28 04:25:00 95% of Ak will just keep using cars , regardless.

Why?

Well for instance, I worked in Albany, finishing at 7:30pm.

No buses at all at that time.
OK, say I finished a bit earlier....before 7pm. It would have involved 3 (THREE!!!) buses, a total walk of 1.4km, 2 hours 10 minutes and $96 for 4 days of this joy.
While I could drive in 25 minutes.

Now, working in Mangere, haha, forget that, trains/buses/hours/cost......it's completely ridiculous.

They forget most people don't work in the CBD. They go from some suburb to another.

And.....school holidays, suddenly your slow, congested journey is clear and speedy. What does that tell you?

Make the children catch buses or walk. Ban school cars.

Hence the massive overhaul of the bus network. ;)

1347220 2013-06-28 05:09:00 Surprised me. I was overseas and had a chat to some tourists from LA and they said they were at a lost in Japan when using the trains b/c they said that they had the overlander but generally everyone just drives everywhere ...

Perhaps AKL is emerging, it is the largest city of the country etc, but it is still comparable to a city overseas where they may choose not to have an extensive rail network.

I think that many will still choose to drive. It won't in the near term reach where mum and dad go on the train with the kids day-to-day. In Welly which they say is better than AKL. We pay $7 return per day or $35 for the 5 day week - this is on a discounted bus card. Maybe ok for the single person but a couple would need to pay $70 every week, why not drive? Depending where you live you may find that that public transport is not as quick due to the route they do. I think everyday people will embrace public transport when it becomes a financing / caring for a motor vehicle becomes too unrealistic. Maybe the costs are just way too high - like Singapore or way too busy like Japan. But then again, if you live in the suburbs and let's say some of the large companies relocate to the cheaper land such as Wellington CBD to the Hutt - in some countries people choose to public transport to the CBD but drive to work. Like they do in Kuala Lumpur. A lot of the companies is in Petaling Jaya so they drive there but public transport elsewhere including the mum and dad and kids.

1347222 2013-06-28 07:44:00 Digby will have the answer, he would get the extra 20 million people he wants in NZ to pay :)
Perhaps you could tell us what the optimum # is.

1347223 2013-06-28 07:57:00 It's another options where people can choose public transport . Maybe the network would be more comprehensive and they can go from suburb to suburb - dunno, not checked the details or suburb to airport or to the CBD . But I doubt it . I think it's gonna be a hybrid approach where they install trains in certain needy spots and then have to interchange with bus .

In every country where they have a fantastic public transport system they have chocka full of traffic . NZ isn't gonna reach a point where mum/dad goes on bus with kids every morning . So I think it's another option but many will choose to drive still even for those if driving do cost more money and time .

On the other hand if it wasn't for the rail workshops, government print, post office etc. there probably be a lack of skilled tradesman around

Also the good old days when the Auckland tax payer paid for the Wellington electric system while Auckland remained in the steam train era..
