"legally" - No, when you brought the PC and who ever installed Windows on it,should have put on a legit OS/Product key.

If you supplied the software and COA then that depends on what version it is. If you paid for a OS to be installed, then legally you have to be given the COA & Installation media ( DVD or Download if thats how it was purchased).

What happens when you run keyfinder on the PC, does it show the Product key ?

If keyfinder cant find a Key, or comes back with 25 B's then usually that means its a volume Licence and you are not meant have it, unless you qualify for volume licencing.
When windows product keys are not stored in the registry like in volume licenseing keys it will not show with keyfinder software

Something doesn't sound right.

When you say you got a Office one, did you purchase office or did it come "installed".

Have a read of pcsupport.about.com If you are having problems locating the Product keys with Keyfinder then one of the reasons may apply.

1366981 2014-02-07 22:48:00 Use Keyfinder (see WT's post #9), and you'll find your current install's COA. feersumendjinn (64)

1366983 2014-02-08 04:32:00 I wouldnt post the key. Now everyone will know what it is Speedy Gonzales (78)
1366984 2014-02-08 06:24:00 Hi Speedy, I don't follow that, is that key genuine? I'm still not sure I can get (from a previous post in " - ") a file like the iso one I downloaded to get me out of trouble if ever required

"the real point is, if I need to do a reinstall or repair without the O S disk I'm lost so if I could get a way to do this it'd be great"

hope this makes some sort of sense

1366985 2014-02-08 06:31:00 The key you posted is showing as legit, in other words google didn't bring up any results. BUT if you didn't get the DVD and Sticker its only a guess as to what type of key it is. Ask the person / shop who built it for you for the DVD and Product key, you are meant to have it if you paid for it.

Since you mentioned" I've downloaded an ISO file for W7, 3.167Gb - x17- 58997.iso" that will boot and allow you to do any repairs. As for reinstalling if needed, depending on what type of key it is will depend on if it will work.

You can always make the ISO a universal DVD - have a read of www.sevenforums.com That way it will accept any type of Windows 7 Key, you would select the OS you have for the Key ( home Pre edition) Note: you would only have to do Stage 1

1366986 2014-02-08 07:09:00 thanks "Wainui" that last post pretty much gives me the info I wanted - I know the guy that built the computer and he's genuine. I did mention to him when I bought it about the O S disk and he said words to the affect "let me know but you wont have any trouble with it," i didn't press him 'cause he doesn't ask for any payment usually, like when i had XP he'd fix it and say goodbye. There are some honest people out there - many thanks for your time and patience, cheers, Jayal jayal (1291)
