Got my replacement laptop , goes good

Just wondering ...

Is Windows 8.1 all good to upgrade to at the moment? upgraded on my old pc and getting error messages etc. Have they sorted the issues?

Also if I did upgrade , as a back up, is it possible to have a copy of 8.1 for if I want to reset to factory without reverting it to windows 8?? Hope you get what I mean

Thanks

Thanks Theres no guarantee that the Laptop will upgrade to W8.1

So far in the last few weeks, I've had three people contact me with problems.

Brand New HP laptops ( less than a day old in one case) both went through the process of trying to upgrade from W8, did all the MS and HP updates, but completely failed when 8.1 went in with different "unknown Errors", then finally after crashing it 3-4 times it would roll back to W8.

One I even tried putting in a different HDD, did a fresh install on 8.1, then as soon as I put in the HP drivers same problem ---Failed, crashed wouldn't boot.

One guy contacted HP, who sent out a set of recovery DVD's, wiped the drive clean, re installed W8 from fresh, -- Upgraded to W8.1 :( Same thing.

The problem is NOT W8.1 its HP's altered drivers for the hardware they use.

Not to say all are the same but theres lots of people having the same problem, and all HP say is re-install it from fresh, but thats just a cop out as they dont know.

If the Laptop has any data, make sure its backed up first, in case it fails.

Haven't had this happen with other Brands, ( ASUS, Toshiba,Lenovo or Sony) ONLY HP.

Re the saving 8.1 -- If its from the windows store - Not really, as its not downloaded as a ISO or any other type of system/file you can install from.

All you can really do is the following: howto.cnet.com

1366772 2014-02-08 09:22:00 Ahh that's redic!!

I'll give it a go---if it works, is system image the best way to make a back up of 8.1 for if I need to reset to factory? rather not revert to 8 then upgrade again to 8.1!

Thanks btw wainuitech, always helpful!

Thanks btw wainuitech, always helpful! "IF" it fails while trying to upgrade to 8.1, it downloads, starts to install, then on reboot to finish off the job all turns to custard.

Each time I've had it happen it goes through, with the message updating system dont not turn off bla bla ------- then it crashed, black screens or endless reboots or fatal errors. Tried everything, removing graphic Drivers, removing bluetooth drivers, all network drivers , -----doesn't work. Last time I contacted HP and tried to get a fix, all they said was re-install from the recovery partition -- when I said already done that twice, downloaded 8.1 twice -- not doing it again, all they did was send links to possible fixes, everything I had already tried.

Yours may go fine, only one way to see, try it.

Personally I wouldn't want to make a image of a failed/ broken system.

HP's are also a pain to image and rework when putting back. They have five or six hidden partitions, each time I've tried to image a HP and put it back it fails :(
PS every HP has been a HP ENVY

1366774 2014-02-08 09:45:00 Yup will try it. what I mean is that once you upgrade to 8.1, if you want to reset to factory it reverts to 8, right? So since the computer is new, would system image be the best thing to do once I've upgraded? to use in case it gets a virus or something without going back to win 8??

Sorry if that makes no sense haha

1366775 2014-02-08 09:57:00 Yep, If you reset it using the recovery partition, it will go back to how it was when first purchased.

Imaging a working HP 8.1 :illogical Due to their mickey mouse partitioning, so far haven't managed to get one to work. It goes through the process of creating the image, putting it back and working is another matter.

Go to the start screen, type in Disk Management, open it from the results, and look how its partitioned :waughh: OR boot from a Bootable Partitioning CD.

1366776 2014-02-08 10:29:00 Haha that does look like a strange paritions

any other way to have a backup of windows 8.1 if I need it without resetting to factory?? saves all the time of going back to windows 8, then upgrading again... not to mention my internet lol

1366777 2014-02-08 21:41:00 Haven't found a way yet for HP - Defaults. Meaning as they come from the factory. I personally dont have any HP /W8, and I dont keep customers computers for any length of time to experiment with.

If the Laptops were wiped and a standard install put in no problems.

1366778 2014-02-09 07:08:00 Ah that's all good. Thanks wainuitech

Another q (sorry!)

Is it usual to have a Supposedly 750 GB HDD but the two drives, Windows & Recovery to total 697GB ?
pct (16854)
1366779 2014-02-09 08:02:00 Thats a little to high.

From memory ( these figures pop into mind, so will be out a bit) - the recovery partition should be roughly 15-20GB give or take a few of GB's. The main drive fresh install roughly 30GB. The recovery partition is in a compressed format. Dont have any HP W8's here at the moment to check.

When doing an upgrade, assuming its installed OK and all your programs and data are working, then you delete the windows.old folder, which is the old W8. Usually around 15GB
