1348205 2013-07-08 03:15:00 Thought you might be referring to Giant Killer which is a classic SF story by A Bertram Chandler, but nope . Nevertheless its worth reading - I remembered it from 30 years ago which indicates its a strong story .

A review of Baen books:

"The issue also includes the classic science fiction story “Giant Killer” by A . Bertram Chandler, the story of Shrick, a mutant rat aboard a spaceship . Shrick, initially sentenced to be a sacrificial meal for his tribe because for being malformed, escapes and rises to power in another tribe . Eventually, Shrick faces off with the “Giants” on board the ship…that is, its human crew . This is a very readable story . . . . . . the telling is worthwhile and the non-human point-of-view makes it more interesting than a “mutant rat invades ship” story . "

1348207 2013-07-08 07:28:00 OK, I've worked out what book I was thinking of and it is different to what you described - Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke (en.wikipedia.org) Jen (38)
1348208 2013-07-08 09:31:00 Plague Ship - Andre Norton.

BTW - if that is the correct book you can get it as a free eBook from Project Gutenberg (sp?)

1348209 2013-07-08 09:41:00 Hmmm, not the story that you decribe Metla, no where near as lurid, but a good read is - "Non-Stop by Brian W. Aldiss".

www.goodreads.com

I think his best book is "Hothouse", my daughter is named after a character in the book.

That is in fact the exact same book.:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Thank you kindly.

1348210 2013-07-08 10:10:00 You're recommending something like that to your dad?

I'd recommend it to everyone but me and my father have similar taste in books and have knocked over 100's of sci-fi books.

I have read a number of Brian Aldiss books and enjoyed them all.

1348211 2013-07-08 10:15:00 From a review I just found...

Then, out of nowhere, the semi-realistic setting is shattered when a bunch of intelligent rats stroll into a scene towing a caged, telepathic rabbit they are using to extract information from prisoners. And this has no bearing on any of the rest plot, before or after, but is the first of many more WTF moments.

Its now on the list.

Although the list is currently at 800 titles, and I stopped going through the list and went off on a tangent of 60 or so books...

Must get back to the list
