1346958 2013-06-26 21:56:00 Looks like some people are also getting a this update is not applicable to your computer message too. As it says here (www.askvg.com). If they're getting it from the store

Changing the locale to the languages listed on the above site (Arabic, English (US), Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.) MAY fix it.

1346960 2013-06-26 22:55:00 Doing a fresh install --- this will go down like a lead balloon -- Using custom install -- When installing you are forced to have a MS live account- theres no option ( currently anyway) to opt out of it - this is so it can use Skydrive for backups if you want and to sign into MS ( you can opt out of skydrive). If you already have a live account, theres no big deal.

Once installed you can then go into the account settings and change it to a Local account

1346961 2013-06-27 00:05:00 I am running the 'Classic Shell' program on Win 8. I presume that must be uninstalled before installing 8.1? Paul Ramon (11806)
1346962 2013-06-27 00:19:00 Dunno - Personally I dont use classic shell, learnt to use the system as it was meant to be used ;) wainuitech (129)
1346963 2013-06-28 04:08:00 Well found one problem - Wouldn't this rip ya undies :D

Just as well I imaged the drive before trying:

DONT install any third party Antivirus software yet into 8.1

Just about ALL the software, Nod32, Avast, Norton, McAfee, Trend -- everything either causes a total stuff up, and consistent reboots, OR if any does install it over loads there CPU to high percentages. The only one that does work is the inbuilt MSSE ( windows defender)

1346964 2013-06-28 04:12:00 There's also an issue with touch scrolling in Metro apps apparently: it'll be fixed in the RTM though, but hopefully an update comes out for the preview. pcuser42 (130)
1346965 2013-06-28 05:50:00 I got the e-mail yesterday saying the preview was available and a link to a demo video at MS, watched it and could see no real improvements at all to be honest.
I've gotten used to windows 8 now and mostly like it, my only remaining gripe is how the desktop and apps don't play nice with each other meaning I'm slowly but surely changing all my file associations to the desktop applications.

What happens that annoys me is;
From explorer you navigate to a folder with files in it, find a file you want to use and double click it, turns out the default asssociation is with a "metro" app so it opens there, you do what you came to do then.... ok I've learnt to drag the window down to close it so I do that and - start screen pops up. It's a minor irritation but I think it should go back to where you were. I fell like either they need a back button that functions like android and takes you back where you came from, or closing an app should do that by default. Yeah alt tab works but it's not as simple as the old school single click to close the window and return to where you were - or using the task bar.

Other than that I'm rather liking 8 these days, had to abandon dual boot to get there though because with 7 available i just kept using it instead.

1346966 2013-06-28 07:47:00 Just to be clear, how many prefer Win 8.? Cicero (40)
1346967 2013-06-28 08:01:00 At least it hasn't crashed (yet).

And now that I've figured out how to stream videos to the Xbox. And using homegroup to stream to the other PC's here. And I've got a start menu (using classicshel), it's not too bad. And now that I've finally replaced the videocard (to one thats fanless, the fan was getting on my nerves).

Only annoying thing is, defender wants to scan nearly every hour of every day :lol: I haven't installed the preview tho. I'll wait till its RTM. Before I install it
