2014-01-30 20:31:00 | Any Linux experts ? History -- Old Dell PC, blew its board, attached HDD to another PC, Linux Redhat 2.4, On boot up it seems to be loading (kind of, installs new hardware, but lots of errors) but then stops at the following -Shown in picture for over an hour now -- can anyone give me the commands or suggest how to get it to carry on. looked On Google, but nothing with the exact same message. 5515 PS: Re-installing is not an option as theres several programs on it that are required, that the person had written for him which can no longer be obtained.

2014-01-30 21:15:00 | Judging by that error message it's not detecting any hardware on boot up so it's throwing an error at that point. I did a bit of googling and got this link ubuntuforums.org I'm not a linux user so I don't know any linux commands but I'm used to ferreting out problems with Javascript and PHP.. so the theory is similar.

2014-01-30 21:26:00 | I am so out of touch with Linux, but I can point you in the right direction a bit more. X server is your graphical (GUI) program. It is throwing a wobbly. I am guessing your X settings do not suit the new computer. Can you view the error log? cat /var/log/XFree86.0.log Look for the last few lines to get some more clues. Then hang 10 here until the Linux gurus turn up. :)

2014-01-30 21:29:00 | Wow - 2.4 is about 10 years old! The error is "no screens found" for the xserver. Usually an incorrect configuration for the actual video hardware. What was it? What is it now? On new systems this type of error is pretty much always with proprietary drivers, but with the old Xfree86 (instead of Xorg which is used now) I'm not sure. Step 1 would be to read the logfile listed, to see if there is any more detailed info about the problem. less /var/log/Xfree86.0.log

2014-01-30 22:43:00 | Got it sorted thanks, it was the graphics, had to downgrade the graphic card, to a VERY old AGP with a whooping 32MB video memory  Once I had done that it went through and asked to configure new hardware - accepted and its now running fine. The program was one that was written for the guy years ago, the person who wrote it is no longer about. Its a bit like Windows & DOS -- Some programs are good for what they were designed for and never been upgraded. Thanks for the suggestions.

2014-01-31 06:55:00 | Wow - 2.4 is about 10 years old! Actually I'm pretty sure that Redhat 8 is around 10-11 years old coz it came out when I was working at IDG (PCWorld). 2.4 would be ... I dunno I'm guessing like 18 years ago?

2014-01-31 07:29:00 | Not sure there is a 2.4 version - sure you don't mean a v2.4-something kernel? | Agent_24 (57) | |
2014-01-31 08:49:00 | Not sure there is a 2.4 version - sure you don't mean a v2.4-something kernel? The screen shot below is all I know, So pass ?? Mind you wouldn't surprise me, as linux often seem to say everything, a person is expected to "know" ;) 5517 No actual "words" saying kernel etc, And people say Windows is hard :p All's sweet, its going now anyway - He'll be happy as its part of his work.

2014-01-31 09:09:00 | No actual "words" saying kernel etc, And people say Windows is hard :pThat is your kernel version. I remember that version! Think I was running Red Hat 9? I know I started with Red Hat 8... so long ago. :waughh: | Jen (38) | |
2014-01-31 09:35:00 | Thanks Jen,, Told ya :D Nowhere does it say redhat 8, 9, or what ever. No wonder people who dont use linux all the time get confused with whats what ;). As I said its running sweet now -- Not having the program is costing him $$ he said. Funny only went to his place to fix a Vista PC and get this as well --------- thems the breaks, pity the iPad problem couldn't be fixed :)
