1347196 2013-06-27 23:02:00 The new Ak rail loop.
How is Ak going to pay ? These things never come in on budget
Has J.Key performed a master stroke, knowing that Ak has to come up with 1/2 the $$ & that may never happen.
Is that the reason the JK's about turn on this.

AK car drivers will just not tolerate
- ANOTHER petrol tax : what happened to the last 2 petrol taxes increases that were 'to pay for transport systems'
- rates increases : That just wont fly .
- congestion charges :its just another tax & is not fair to those who have no choice but to use a car (my job REQUIRES me to use my car)
- Borrow the $ : Ak council has so much debt that Ak has had its credit rating downgraded.
There have been many warnings that Ak Council has far too much debt & is allready unsustainable. It has to eventually be paid back. I think its at approx $1000 per ratepayer at the mo. So all you ratepayers, you actually owe the banks another $1000+ , & increasing. Want to double it ?
- charging the actual/real costs to the train/bus users : if that happened no-one could afford to use them

So where will the $$ come from.
NZ govt has no spare cash is is borrowing big time to stay afloat
Ak Council has no spare cash is is borrowing big time to stay afloat

Not to mention the ongoing costs to keep it running, these things run at a huge loss for very little usage (as a % of total Ak transport users)

Is Ak congestion really getting worse? My 1 hour drive into work has taken 1 hour for the last 10+ years. If anything there is slightly less traffic now.

ah, the Emperor has no clothes :2cents:

1347198 2013-06-27 23:21:00 I've heard the Government may use funds from asset sales to fund the City Rail Link. Interesting move - it's using an unpopular policy to fund a popular (and essential) one.

Excellent, so my 50 minute rail commute is quicker than driving. ;)

Given that Auckland is a third of the country's GDP, the entire country will benefit from people actually getting to work in Auckland rather than being stuck on the Southern Carpark.

I have heard this argument before and its bullshit.

Sorry but how is getting our biggest economy going not going to benefit the rest of the country?

And besides, we shouldn't be too worried about how the rail link is funded because it'll give back far more than what is invested in returns; financially or otherwise.

1347201 2013-06-27 23:35:00 Again bullshit

Its another case of Auckland trying to obtain money from the rest of the country for Auckland's benefit and Christchurch does not have any to give, we have our own problems.

And yet the Government is happy to pay for the holiday highway and other road projects with everyone's taxes. Double standard?

Please give some REAL proof of this claim. There isnt any, its just weasel words to try & justify all this.

Its really just a huge sink hole for $$, that we dont have.
95% of Ak will just keep using cars , regardless. So how can this huge cost really be justified. Last time i rode a bus it had 3 passengers for 1/3 of the trip. Public $ well spent there .
Public transport in AK just isnt practical for most Ak'ers.
Unless you work within spitting distance of a train station or bus stop. Most simply dont & wont walk that last 30-60+ minutes, in the rain.

As for the rest of the country paying for Ak, the truth may really be that Aker's tax pays for the rest of the country

I don't agree with this either, so what is your point?

I wonder if said bus was heading into the city at 11pm, because the last time I rode a train (7:10am into town) it was completely full by Homai - the same thing happened on Census day.

Have you heard of build it and they will come? Rail patronage was at 2.5 million passengers per annum in 2003: ten years later, this is now 10 million passengers, far higher than predictions back in 2003 - we've come a long way in ten years. (And 95% is definitely a figure plucked out of thin air.)

The benefit-cost ratio of the City Rail Link sits around $2.50 of returns for every $1 spent - that's a fantastic return.

And if you don't believe me, have a dig around http://transportblog.co.nz ;)

Which is exactly why we want our fair share ;)
