1479118 2021-08-04 21:52:00 When I went to school we were taught that when the colonists came to New Zealand and found out that the maoris had no written language then they wrote it down for them and they wrote it down as they heard it. Surely if they had heard Owtearoa, that is what they would have written down. But they didn't. They wrote Aotearoa. So why do they say Owtearoa? And what about Whakatane? Why do they say Fukutaneh? I can't understand where they get F from Wh. And why do they pronounce an a as a u? And e as eh? And so much more.

Where do they get this pronunciation from? TVNZ seems to lead this crazy way of pronouncing maori. There just does not seem to be a standard, only TVNZ's standard.:groan:

And while we are talking about TVNZ - why do they have all this maori on the news and Seven Sharp? I'm certain the majority of viewers have absolutely no idea what they are talking about - not even most of the maoris.:annoyed:

I'm still getting over the $70k spent on a 'rainbow' pedestrian crossing at Cuba Mall.

1479121 2021-08-05 01:01:00 The English language, as its written is an arse.
So how about tidying that up before pointing fingers at other languages

English : ph is f . Thats right , its English language that does that sort of thing . Its because our PURE English language is a dogs breakfast of other language's words
i before e , except when it isnt just because
ou instead of just o (the yanks got that right when they fixed it)
silent letters : just why ???

Maori dont have problems with their language. We do , because why tried to use our dogs bollocks written english for their words .

1479122 2021-08-05 01:29:00 I can't understand where they get F from Wh.

And don't forget Roscoe there is no "F" in the Maori alphabet, but that is now irrelevant it would seem. :groan:

I was not having a go at other languages - I was taking TVNZ to task for dreaming up their own idea of how to pronounce maori. I said in my original post - and I reiterate - that the colonists wrote down phonetically what they heard the maoris say. So if they heard the moaris say Pupukuda they would have written Pupukuda, but they wrote down Papakura. So where does TVNZ get their crazy ideas on pronunciation from?

And you are correct, BM. Where do they get F from WH? As you say, there is no F in maori. Besides, I don't think that the Fuk in Fukutaneh sounds very nice.:waughh:

The original Maori alphabet was based on Maori as she is spoke in Northland. Just like English and plenty of other languages, there are other dialects such as in the South Island.
In Gore, people have their own unique way of pronouncing English and Maori.

You are right Roscoe.

The old English Linguistics were a pedantic lot and that is why the Maori alphabet only has 15 letters of which “F” isn’t one.

However, some 3/4 Pakeha, that have been “University Trained”, have overlooked this. ;)

Then why haven't you written to them instead?
Offer to tutor them in the correct way to say these words.

1479127 2021-08-06 09:43:00 TVNZ staff are legends (in their own minds).
They try to copy Ngapuhi which uses Wh as F.
Many other Tribes use the W as we do. e.g. Wanganui
Depending where you are Mt Cook is Aorangi or Aoraki
Former National Party Treaty Minister Chris Finlayson gave incoming Treaty Minister Andrew Little a sage peace of advice which was ignored.
"Walk away from Ngapuhi until they sort themselves as to who their representatives are THEN start treaty settlement talks."
The "so called " Maori Flag is only recognised by some tribes
As to Te Reo surely some self help is needed. Other etnicities such as the various Indian dialects , Chinese -Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien -, Philippines-Tagalo seem to not need help from outside their own communities to maintain their language.
