256688 2004-07-30 06:17:00 Hiya, I just received my newsletter in the mail today. Did some quick maths. Am I really better off? I don't think so, not to say all are thou.

This is soley based on airpoints and no flybuys or globalplus or hotel points or car rental points which can be asisted.

First I assumed most are not lucky to get a free flight every yr or two. So I put it down as for a period of 5yrs - the validity of the points can last. My calculation is each yr for 5yrs I travel overseas once. I compare this situation with the old scheme and the new one and see how much proportion off the fee ticket I can get.

Firstly based on offpeak fares when airpoints needed would be less. As its now how much the fare is = the points needed. They are now using dollar airpoints rather than the old one. Say AKL -> Brisbane needs $398 = 398 points needed .. .. .. .. (as quoted on theri airpoints brochure).

So each yr of 5yr I go to Brisbane; old = 50.4% of points gathered from the points needed to get one free flight to Brisbane. New = I have 75%. Improvement.

Likewise; London old is 85%, new is 61%. Not improvement.
LA old is 54%, new is 60%. Marginal improvement.
Asia old is 78.75%, new is 63%. Not improvement.

These are based on fares at all off peak times and that was quoted on their brochure ie .. $1700 = 1700 dollar points needed for London, $950 for Singapore, $1320 for LA, $398 for Brisbane. Points obtained are independent of season, points used for maths were also obtained from the brochure.

As these are off peak prices. When we want the preferable times to travel we would need more points for the free flight as the prices at peak seasons would be more .. .. So really, the above maths are the best it can be, busier seasons would just make it harder to obtain.

What do you airpoint holders think?

Oh the clause is if you did not fly one Star Alliance flight be it local express flight or international you would need to pay $30 annual fee for subscription to the point scheme. $20 if paid on the net. If you are a Globalplus or a Flybuy home loan account, you do not need to or if you have flown one Star Alliance or more .. ..

256689 2004-07-30 06:29:00 Points obtained ar independent of season. I mean if I fly to Brisbane now at offpeak time I earn 30 point each way. However if I fly in Xmas when its $$$, I still get only 30 pts.

While, the ponts needed for offpeak reward to Brisbane can be 398pts for a $398 fare, if I wanted to go in Xmas the fare and hence the points needed can be considerably more ...

I suppose if you have points to burn you can go in Xmas and use a lot of points but in terms of using the pts wisely the new scheme I don't think its better off.

Well, better than nothing :)

256690 2004-08-01 21:23:00 I suspect the only people who are better off are Air NZ and business travellers who pay max fares and can write them off as tax. The Joe Public flyer will be worse off. I see that Amex is discontinuing it's Air NZ Airpoints scheme at the end of 2004 so I guess the new scheme is worse that the old scheme.. paulw (1826)
256691 2004-08-04 02:12:00 the globalplus c/c is already has a higher yr fee than other c/c's.

the new plan says you need to travel least one star alliance flight to void the $30 ($20 on set) annual fee. Or you can be a flybuy homeloan customer or a globalplus customer.

the clause is, alredy GP has a higher fee than other c/c's. This has been devoted to this scheme. From Nov 2004, GP fees are going up again, $5 each month. So you are paying $10/yr more, while someone else pays $20 more on the web. Way to avoid it is to have a homeloan with them .. certainly this attracts less favored rates/conditions. Must be a compromise somewhere ...

Well its better than nothing and in NZL the only plans are Qantas One World or Air NZ Star Alliance. Least the c/c helps a bit even if we need to pay more .. but I would not be betting all my flights must be with SA, these tend to be more $$ than other carriers.

256692 2004-08-04 02:15:00 Amex i now avail on globalplus with the amex bank. yes, a whole set of diff ball game thou .... not sure if the charge card is a avail. prob just a BNZ AMEX credit card with limits... but the AMEX loyalty plans are not part of it. YOu're playing wtih BNZ's rules.

$1 = 2pt on amex. Not sure how this is converted to AirNZ dollar points thou - to be released in Nov.

This is $5 more every 6 months thus $10 more annually.
