| 256610 | 2004-07-30 04:09:00 | For the last several weeks I have been trying to access FAQs. They often do not open at all, if they do open it can take several minutes. There is some good info there so I hope the person in charge can speed it up. The entire site is very slow at this time. | IanS (924) | ||

| 256612 | 2004-07-30 05:16:00 | Who is that masked person?? Jun,2002 Three posts now and all 3 totally uncalled for. As for the speed of the site, I've not had any problems with it. The FAQ section is known to be slow as already stated in early threads. |

| 256614 | 2004-07-30 05:52:00 | The FAQ section is going to get an overhaul over the next few weeks so hopefully that will speed things up a bit until a permanent solution can be arranged by the webmasters. Meanwhile, to get a FAQ to open (almost) instantly copy and paste FAQ title into the Search box for the relevant FAQ with the author's username in the Username box then click on the link in the results. It works every time. |

Having gone back through earlier posts you have made your main complaint appears to be SLOW for this and that. It appears to me that you run a CPU at 233 Mhz and the operating system is Win98. I have no idea what your ISP is and don't know if you are using some dial up modem or ADSL or another broadband connection. For all I know you may be using a 2400 modem. You may be using a 14.4 or 28.8 or 33.6 or 56Kbps I also have no idea about your other hardware like how much RAM you have etc. Not that the RAM size will be applicable here. The main bottle necks will come from your hardware and your ISP and the server you are trying to access. Now if there are heaps of users on pressF1 all trying to access various things then I guess it will get slow. This will happen with any server and you will note that if a particular site gets an advert that sends heaps of people there then the whole server may well fall over. There have been a number of people on this site with the same problem as you. "FAQs are slow" Personally I have found these FAQs slower than the rest of the site and I use a broadband wireless for my ISP. I can generally get to a particular FAQ in seconds rather than minutes. If you try the search function to the right of the PressF1 logo you may well get to what you want answered. There are heaps of FAQs about and I suggest you have a look through. Do a search. There are now over a quarter of a million posts on this site. Over to you to find what you want. This may be something I can do. A FAQ on how to use a search engine. You can also go make a coffee or tea while a FAQ is downloading. |

| 256616 | 2004-07-30 23:27:00 | Many thanks to Susan B for helpful advice. I just typed the info into search and as you say it works! To Elephant, my OS is ME, I am on a wireless connection via WIRED COUNTRY which is much faster than dial up and links from other sites all work quickly. |

I can generally get to a particular FAQ in > seconds rather than minutes. I have made a couple of posts about FAQ speed lately myself, including This One (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) recording two download speed tests I carried out, and I'd love to know what secret advantage broadband wireless can offer that gets an FAQ on screen in seconds rather than minutes regularly and reliably and faster than Jetstream. My current download speed (according to Jetstream Games speed test) is 575 K bytes/sec or 4684.8 K bits/sec. Most of us know the pathway to speedier access, but that is no help to new arrivals who probably have time to cook a three-course meal if they are on dial up, never mind making a cup of tea. Nothing in my system is slowing the FAQ load, and I rather doubt that anything in Ian's is responsible for his experience either. Hopefully Bruce & robo's gnomes will work their magic one day soon, when time and budget allow. Cheers Billy 8-{) :) |
