256580 2004-07-30 03:09:00 I have for a while been having random crashes and lock ups, they can happen any time during boot up, when XP is loaded, some times the screen goes blank, or just locks. It can also just completely restart from no where.

I am 99% certain it is not software as it happens during boot, and also I have done a reinstall of XP, and it also happens in linux.

I'm not sure what piece of hardware causes it, I have done memtests with memtest86 (i think thats its name) and that turned up blank, I ran a MS memtest, it did come up with an error once, but I could not repeat it.

The ram chip does have funny bumps on one of the "cells" but I'm not sure if that could be the problem.

If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it :)

Have you got another strip of ram to test?

Lo.

256582 2004-07-30 04:14:00 Could you please provide your system specs? In particular what brand of PSU? whats the wattage? What sort fo cooling does your case have? Is the graphics card hot to touch?

I'd be willing to bet that your crashes are either caused by overheating or by a inadequate PSU. Seeing as youve run memtest it would appear as that the ram is fine but testing with a spare stick wouldnt hurt. If you dont have a spare stick do you have a friend you could borrow some from perhaps?

256583 2004-07-30 10:40:00 PSU is a Maxway 350W, the case has heatsink+fan and case fan.

The graphics card is quite hot, but the comp has been on a while.

I don't have spare RAM which is a shame, and no one to really borrow one off either.

256584 2004-07-30 11:33:00 Random crashes are often caused by faulty ram or ram that is
not compatible with your system and Xp responds by rebooting.
Lockups on the other hand are often a video card or driver problem
XP is very touchy about drivers.
XP reboots when it crashes and is actually quite annoying, (I think it's Microsofts way of showing XP does not crash) because there is some
good info on the BSOD screen on why the PC crashed.
To change the default behavior right click my computer, properties, advanced, and go into settings of start up and recovery, untick automatically restart under system failure, then when it crashes you'll be able to see what it is.
Ram is always the first place to look though, you really need to try another stick.

256585 2004-07-31 02:37:00 I turned off reboot on crash and I got the following error:

Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, OxBF833C84, OxF4065794, OxOOOOOOOO)

win32k.sys Address BF833C84 base at BF800000, Date stamp 3ec91421

Tho I am guessing It doesn't really mean alot.

Anyone have any PC1600/DDR200 or PC2100/DDR266 DDR memory that they don't need? heh.

256586 2004-07-31 02:39:00 It means its a faulty sector in your stick or ram,you might as well start saving for a new stick immediatly. metla (154)
256587 2004-07-31 02:41:00 Actually, seeing as memtest came up clean it would still be a good idea to do futher testing, are you freindly with any computer stores by any chance?

and no i don't mean DSE.

256588 2004-07-31 02:56:00 Definatly going to get a new ram, but I am lost as to whether it is also the cause of the lock ups? can ram problems cause the computer to just freeze? Name (757)
