256445 2004-07-29 09:00:00 Hi guys

I just got this friends comp here and found out his graphic's card fan has stopped working, though the graphic itself and everything is still working ok.

His graphic card is Geforce 4 MMX440 (64MB), is it possible to replace the fan on it, it seems like its clipped on though there is a power cable from the card itself to the fan that seem to be very stiff or it just cant be taken out. So is it possible to replace it? Right now I'm thinking about buying this VGA Cooler (www.dse.co.nz) for it from DSE, any one think its worth it price or any good? Or should I get him to get the graphic to a comp shop and ask them to fix it ( i know that may cost a bit :S )

Thanks

256446 2004-07-29 09:14:00 Just a VGA heatsink will do the job. Have a surf around Ascent in the cooling section. My MX440 only had a small heatsink on it and it was fine. kiki (762)
256447 2004-07-29 09:16:00 Do you really need to buy a new fan for it?
If the card is only used for normal use, e.g not games, then you wont need a fan because the gpu most likely will not get too hot.
On the other hand if you do play games, Will the fan be more expensive than the card it's self these days?

256449 2004-07-29 09:40:00 The DSE kit worked great for my GE4 card. Be carefull with the clip selection and a bit of force is needed to get the clip onto the stand offs.

The fan is very quite, but on my card the heat sink is covering half of a couple of the RAM chips.

Only other pain is the connector on the fan is a 3 pin one, with fan speed sense, but it does come with a molex adaptor. In the end I stuck it on the case fan connector on MB.

256450 2004-07-29 11:15:00 When my Ge4 fan seized I used an old fan off an old CPU/Heatsink and screwed it onto the vid card's heatsink. Had to be at least as good as the thin plasticy rubbish fan that was clipped in before.

Connected to a spare 12v lead in the PC and bob was my uncle.

256451 2004-07-29 11:45:00 My GeForce MX 420 doesn't even have a fan. Then again it is considerably less powerful. Growly (6)
