256503 2004-07-29 08:09:00 First. Thank you to all of you who replied to my "Screen Settings" problem.
Still no improvement, but that is less of a problem than my present one..

Win 98, on four year old H.P., upgraded with 256 mem and 80g hard drive.
have every cover I can think of, Winfast, Zone alarm, Incredimail popup jammer, and the Full Nortons.
On start up, all the icons show up as "Windows icons" and slowly fill up to their programme icons.

Whats going on? and how can I speed up my machine again?

All help gratefully received

Pete

256504 2004-07-29 08:15:00 SpyBot, Ad-Aware and have fewer icons on your desktop. I only have icons on the desktop which I will use when I first turn the PC on. The more you have the more memory they use. mikebartnz (21)
256505 2004-07-29 08:23:00 have you increased your icon cache ?? tweak'e (174)
256506 2004-07-29 08:26:00 You'd think 256Mb with Win98 would zip along - what size processor do you have? IMHO one way of speeding up the PC is to uninstall all of the Nortons software. Have you seen FAQ #25? It might help although it may be slow to load. andrew93 (249)
256507 2004-07-29 10:55:00 Can you click on start>run>then type in msconfig and press OKmthen click on the Startup tab, take a quick count and report back how many items you have listed there.

Ideally you shouldn't have more then 5 or 6.

256508 2004-07-29 11:49:00 Didn't you post this a couple of days ago, and did any of the things that were suggested work? Or didn't you find the post? I know a few things were suggested then, just wondering if any worked, so can try and think of something else if they didn't. supergran (108)
256509 2004-07-29 11:52:00 well spotted supergran - I think this (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) is the thread you were referring to. andrew93 (249)
