256725 2004-07-30 10:42:00 original disk is 4GB - c:\ - some time ago had another larger capacity disk installed to store extra files - d:\ - so, c:\ was becoming overloaded once again, decided to move some files to d:\ - with little or no knowledge of why "what was where" and the consequences if moved i included "program files" - you will know the chaos resulting and i've been mortified, but with some assistance have formatted c:\ and reinstalled the O\S and a lot of the other programmes. my questions are:-
what files can be safely moved?
how to know what they are?
is there some logic to what can be moved?
and anything relevant to this subject would be greatly appreciated so i will know why what was where

256726 2004-07-30 23:34:00 The best way of managing your data space, is you put all your own files/photo's/music etc on the slave drive eg My Data. Basically everything that is under My Documents. Program files cannot just be moved as you have discovered, but when you are installing a program for the first time, you may have the option of picking whereabouts you want this item installed. But to keep it simple, just leave the C drive for the OS and all program files, and put all your own data on the slave drive.

With XP (which you don't have), you can actually move the My Documents folder itself to the slave drive and Windows will honour that location whenever you save something to the My Documents location. With other OS's the default My Documents folder will still be located on your C drive, but just use your new My Data folder on the slave instead.

Having all your personal data on a separate drive is great if Windows get corrupted as you can reinstall the OS on the C drive and all your data on the slave drive is safe and untouched.

256727 2004-07-31 05:18:00 A question for Jen
If perchance the C drive in W 98 does get corrupted, as an insurance to allow one to continue to use such programmes can you install programmes like Works , Office CD burning and Photo editing programmes on both the C and the slave drive. as well as your data files? I know youre using a lot of space but is it possible?

256728 2004-07-31 05:44:00 If C drive gets corrupted, there goes your operating system and you will have a non-bootable machine. In order to use Office etc on any drive, you will still need a running OS first.

Reinstalling Windows and apps such as Office doesn't take that long so you wouldn't be without a usable machine for too long. Although, it is better to ensure all your important files are regularly backed up to a removable source such as CD, so in time of need, you can access those files from any machine as long as they have the same application or compatible software installed.
