256715 2004-07-30 10:21:00 Hi Folkz :-)

ive got a 4 year old soundblaster live card which iive always been happy with.. Got a new box with this motherboard ga-7n400-ll with onboard sound. i havent put in my soundcard as ive just gone with the onboard, but now i do want to put my old soundcard.. do i have to uninstall the current onboard sound drivers (realtek ac/97 drivers) first or can i just put my card in and disable onboard in the bios ?

cheers :-)

256716 2004-07-30 11:08:00 I'd disable the on-board sound in the BIOS , reboot ... turn off the 'puter then put in the SB card and install the drivers with or without the other Creative stuff , depending on what you want . Have done similar myself a few times ... if the SB card dies , just take it out and use the on-board sound while sourcing a new card ... hope this helps :) KatiMike (242)
256717 2004-07-30 11:12:00 When I did what you are about to do. First I uninstalled the sound card drivers (in device manager), then disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS as the poster above suggests.

256718 2004-07-30 11:42:00 When i had a PCI sound card installed, I didn't uninstall anything. It merely came up in addition to the onboard sound.

Some PCI sound cards don't offer much of an advantage at all - but I've heard that your model does indeed make a differnece.

256719 2004-07-30 11:55:00 if there is a jumper on the motherboard to disable the onboard audio (i had one on my old DFI) then use it!

Windows prefers it better if the onboard one is "non-existant"

It's a lot easier doing it in the bios. :D

256721 2004-07-30 12:43:00 the jumper method works a treat if that option isnt in the bios - seems with AC'97 You disable in bios, with other stuff (think it was 3D pro audiomax or something) on my DFI, the jumper is the only way. agent_24 (4330)
