256523 2004-07-29 21:07:00 I've heard woosh wireless is really gay for gaming but is it playable? Or is it super lag or something? Kibito (623)
256524 2004-07-29 21:22:00 games are still playable on whoosh just get slightly bigger latency's than you do on dsl plans of the same speed, still better than dial up by a country mile Budda (2736)
256525 2004-07-29 23:01:00 Oh sweet so um on 256k plan right playing UT04 I got pings of around 70.

What do you reckon I can expect on woosh? Faster than jetstart?

256526 2004-07-29 23:36:00 Woosh preforms worse than jetstart in terms of gaming, one of the guys from PCWorld did a review on woosh a while back have search for it .

If you live in the counties manukau region, hamilton or within sight of the sky tower you could consider Wired County . Its also a wireless connection but it has superior latencies, even better than jetstream . Its so much better that they also offer telephone services over their wireless connection meaning you can completly free yourself from Telecom :) .

One of the perks with Jetstart is that you can login to the jetstream games servers and get free uncapped jetstream . They offer game servers for most popular games and a FTP site with all the latest patches and mods aswell as a large collection of linux distros . While logged into the JSG servers you are unable to browse the rest of the web only the sites and service offered on the JSG servers . This means its only really an option when your gaming or if you need the latest patches etc .

One thing to consider is that Telecom are phasing out jetstart, so by the end of the year only the 256k jetsurf plans will be avaliable . Im not sure whether Telecom intends to keep JSG free and uncapped in the future due to recent happenings in regard to the unbundling of the local loop .

Woosh has really poor coverage and often is unable to get anywhere near advertised speeds . Plus their advertising is dodgy as they cap their uncapped service . Unfortunatly jetstream really is the only option for gaming unless you have access to local alternatives such as Wired County .

256527 2004-07-30 00:25:00 RTS gaming = good.
FPS gaming = bad.
Leeching = good.
Web surfing = slower than 56k.

256530 2004-07-30 05:45:00 Well, i meant he should get jet stream, but then again I guess that could be offensive to some religions... Growly (6)
256531 2004-07-30 05:54:00 why should he get Jetstream when he is obviously looking at an alternative solution?

I know your blind to the reasons why people would rather not feed telecom but your not a bill payer,I would think that a large proportion of users would ditch Telecom in a flash if there was an alternative solution,The only reason there isn't is due to the actions of NZ govenments and Telecom hindering competition(as is their perogative) at every step.

256532 2004-07-30 08:14:00 I wouldn't rely on anything as fragile as a low power radio link for serious or reliable data transfer, and the nature of the load management systems kinda suggests that moderate traffic = slow connection.

I'll stick with Jetstream I think, until wireless is fully matured, even more fully resourced, and is offered at a price I can't refuse.:D

Cheers
