257093 2004-08-01 04:52:00 Windows Update keeps advising me to download 823559 Security Update.
I have done this several times and successfully according to Microsoft, but I still keep getting automatic messages to download this. Even the download "History" shows a successful download. How can I stop getting these messages?

257097 2004-08-01 11:30:00 I have had exactly the same problem for months now. I am operating Win98 SE. I would also like to know the solution. summertime (2568)
257098 2004-08-01 13:03:00 Had the same prob with a Win98 PC but it was DirectX 9 wanting to continually install. The PC could not handle DirectX 9 so would not install it but reported it had. Then Windows Update would pop up and say I need to install DirectX 9. Simple away around this was to uninstall the Automatically Notify New Updates (or whatever it was called) from add/remove and prob solved. Just check for updates manually. Might be wrong but are Microsoft still suppling updates for Win98?? Thought they had given that OS away to the dusty corner of the office!! Berryb (654)
257099 2004-08-01 13:13:00 After doing a google search I found this solution. Look in Control Panel/Add/Remove and delete the update from there then restart the computer and run windows update again. I tried it and the update did not appear in the downloads and whoever posted this solution on the web says it does not come back again...here's hoping!!! LOL summertime (2568)

I guess you have Win98SE, as summertime has - and as I have..
The problem with Update 823559 relates to a known M/S fault in that, not one in your system. ( It has come up before in PF1) Just a Microsoft error..
As a newbie, I used to downloaded updates automatically .
Then when I looked in History & found I'd downloaded this one 3 days in a row, I got suspicious & did some searching.
Can't remember at this hour tonight where I found the answer, but it wasn't summertime's google.
I rather think it was Microsoft's own Knowledge Base which provided the answer. Certainly I remember they admitted there was a problem. Try that as a starter, anyway.
For summertime - we did this thread in November, as I remember.?
I'm sorry you still have the problem.
I hope your answer is the proper fix - otherwise I may have to rack my brains for old stuff.
And for both of you - when checking my Update History to make a reply to this post earlier tonight, I found a new Critical Update.
Dealing with that & posting a new thread took some time..so sorry this is so late.

257102 2004-08-01 22:15:00 This may help:

www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs

XP_Hotfix_Prompt.vbs - Prevents Windows Update from prompting you to install a Hotfix you know is already installed.

Usage: Download xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs and save it to your hard drive. Double click the VBS file you downloaded and you'll be prompted to enter the KBxxxxxx or Qxxxxxx number of the Hotfix. No checking is done to see if the Hotfix is actually installed on your system, so its your responsibility to ensure that it is.

Note: I cannot guarantee that this will work for ALL HOTFIXES. Using the tools at my disposal, I have determined how the majority of checking is done for the presence of a particular hotfix. This mechanism may not be the same for all Hotfixes and could change at any time.
