256966 2004-07-31 08:16:00 Hello there,

I have two computers which I wish to turn into servers:

A Pentium 200 and a Pentium 133 . Neithe have more than 2 . 5 GB of space (one has 1 . 3 GB)

They both have more CD rom drives in them than actually work, and in one case the hard drive (really slow) and the cd rom drive (really really slow) are on the same channel (cause the secondary channel doesn't work for some silly reason .

Anywho, my intention is to run them as servers . The lesser of the two as a router or somesort of DNS / menial server, and the higher as maybe some other type .

So i intend to run linux .

I just wanted to know if anyone could recommend a linux that could under such specifications (neither can display more than 640x480) .

Please don't just tell me to find out for myself and give me some index site, I want opinions of which one to use .

Here's what I've tried:

Debian 2 . 0: Downloaded all the floppy images, but it wouldn't recognise the kernel image when I put the root floppy in (after the rescue one) .

Debian 2 . 1: Downloaded all the floppy images, but it wouldn't recognise the kernel image when I put the root floppy in (after the rescue one) .

Debian 2 . 2: Downloaded all the floppy images, but it wouldn't recognise the kernel image when I put the root floppy in (after the rescue one) .

Fedora Core 1: Got as far as the install screen . It crashed . From then on, it would say "No installation signature found . . . " .

Knoppix: After having to switch screens because the knoppix screen=640x480 command didn't work, and formatting it, I realised that there wasn't enough room to install it . Also, booting from the live cd is very very inconvenient to have to do every time .

Mandrake: Managed to get the installer to work . Configured it with minimalistic packages to install, and voila - it crashed when installing them . Tried again, this time it got to 37% and crashed . (Stopped doing anything . ) This was an improvement from the 0% of the the previous attempt .

256967 2004-07-31 08:16:00 Oh, and

Yoper 2: Wouldn't boot from the CD.

256968 2004-07-31 08:33:00 Yoper won't run on a low end system, I'd suggest Mepis but I doubt that would run either, not enough ram and processor too slow . You want to look for distro's for i386 specs and small .

Sorry can't help past that because I haven't tried any of the small ones, there a plenty to choose from but, you could look for Tiny and the firewall/router/server distro's on Distrowatch (click the Search button and scroll down to categories) .

At least that'll get you started untill one of the nix boys show up (SB & JC included) .

256971 2004-07-31 08:43:00 Have not tried it myself and don't know if it is what you want but I saw a reference to Damn Small Linux recently.

Like Knoppix it is a bootable live version that can also be installed.

256972 2004-07-31 09:10:00 Hell, you could try an older distro like RH 7.x, RH 8, MD 8, Turbo Linux 6 etc etc or less. mark.p (383)
256973 2004-07-31 10:13:00 You could also look at Freesco-www.freesco.org mark.p (383)

256975 2004-07-31 10:52:00 Keep us posted ;) I've installed RH 6.2 on a 486dx2/66 with 48 megs of ram on a 1.2 gig hdd using 150 megs as a swapfile, and 512k video card no problems. mark.p (383)
