256907 2004-07-31 06:15:00 Any suggestions on where to get help on networking? I have a Dynalink RTA-300 modem/router feeding my PC running WinXP and that works fine. Then we have an Xbox connected to the router, it can access the internet but cannot talk to the computer for some arcane reason. Next I want to add an oldish laptop running Win98, has a network card, as a second access to the internet, doesnt have to talk to the main PC, but am now totally confused as to how to go about it. Would it be best to install WinXP on the laptop as well?
If anyone could explain how to get the XBox talking to the computer and also how to get the laptop onto the internet, I would be most grateful!

Cheers,
Pat

256908 2004-07-31 07:14:00 I assume the RTA300 has a hub (more than 1 connection port), if you not interested in networking the two, plug the in the win98 computer and If DHCP is enabled on the router then go to, Control Panel > Network Properties, click the Properties with the Network Adapter (TCP/IP) highlighted > enter the router IP adress in the Gateway field (Gateway tab in win 98 I think) and 255.255.255.0 in the Subnetmask field and your ISP's DNS numbers in the Server fields (DNS Configuration tab), away you go. If DHCP is not enabled on the router you will need to assign the laptops IP address or a block of them that will include the XP's IP in the appropriate field, save and exit the router.

Have no idea with the XBox, there is a PF1 thread on it a couple of days ago, do a search for XBox with 7 days for the time period.
