256893 2004-07-31 05:57:00 I was doing some research about wireless networks in NZ. According their company websites, Vodafone charges up to 10c per 10KB for data transfers on its GPRS network, while Woosh charges $39.95 for 1GB.

Using simple mathematics, that means the same 1GB of data would cost ~$40 on Woosh but *$10,000* on Vodafone (i.e. 250 times more expensive!).

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know why there's such a significant discrepancy in pricing? cos I previously thought that they operate using similar wireless/cellular technologies. Vodafone must be making quite a profit from this?

Why such a price >> Cos vodafone gotta pay for their *discounted phoneing* some how.

Might help to actually research your costs instead of making assumptions .

This ( . co . nz/mobileconnect/howmuch . jsp" target="_blank">vodafone . co . nz) link details the charges .

GPRS Everyday Data plans are ideal for Vodafone Mobile Connect Card users . Remember, by using the Optimiser you will be significantly reducing the amount of data you send and receive over the GPRS network, and reducing your monthly bill .

Monthly Rate Plan* Included Data Additional Data*
Everyday Casual Data $0 N/A 10c/10 KB
Everyday Data 1 $5 1 MB 6c/10 KB
Everyday Data 3 $10 3 MB's 6c/10 KB
Everyday Data 5 $15 5 MB's 5c/10 KB
Everyday Data 15 $30 15 MB's 4c/10 KB
Everyday Data 25 $45 25 MB's 3c/10 KB
Everyday Data 50 $80 50 MB's 2c/10 KB
Everyday Data 120 $150 120 MB's 2c/10 KB
Everyday Data 250 $280 250 MB's 2c/10 KB

Each use of the network is charged at a minimum of 10KB's and will be rounded up to the nearest 10KB at 20 minute intervals . Unused data will not be carried over into the following month .

* Prices exclude GST

Note: If you use the Mobile Connect SIM to make voice calls these calls are charged at $20 . 00 per minute . As Mobile Connect Card connections are intended for data only . (Extra charges may apply for roaming)
An outgoing bar should be placed on the connection .

There is more to the issue than data, you are comparing apples with oranges. The cellular netwok is optimised for telephone use, and the interconnection to other telephone networks (and all the charges that result). Data on cellular is a secondary service that occupies a lot of spectrum on what is essentially a narrowband dedicated RF network. Thats why it costs more.

The cost will always be what the market will stand as well. Telecom CDMA data is likewise very expensive.

I suppose that can be done, and I heard it's launching a IP phone service soon too.

On the back of the Woosh modem, there's a sticker that says it operates using the 2.xxx GHz frequency band, which is actually quite similar to the GPRS frequency range.

That is, until the market realises what a rip-off it is...
