256821 2004-07-31 00:59:00 I know that what I am about to asl in in very general terms, but it is inspired by a need to restore the operation of my CD ROM drive.
Is there any foolproof way of Clearing Unwanted Legacy Events from any of the *.ini files that run when the computer starts?
Here is a screen dump for background info in case they may be of help to assist me getting an anwer to my question above.

256822 2004-07-31 03:16:00 Have you tried reinstalling the CD rom and the software (note versions of all before trashing and check for driver, firmware updates). For a total cleanout go through Device Manager after uninstalling and make sure there are no leftovers. Click View > Show hidden devices, which will add a list of, Non-Plug & Play Drivers, to your devices list. Don't rush in there and kill everything in sight, just what you recognise or able to search within your OS and research on the net as not in use and unwanted. You will probably need to manually track down and delete some files and clean out the registry. Install CD with driver and/or firmware updates, plonk your chosen software on.

Good luck

256823 2004-08-02 09:50:00 Thanks, Murray P. This had been, and is ongoing, with me trying everything including uninstalling and reinstalling everything.
Anyhow, what I had suspected - That Windows Media Player came true a few minutes ago. As I write I am enjoying a BG's disk off my CD ROM. :)
The primary thing I remembered to do was to click in Media Player on "Play" and then CD_Audio.:D
Of course, I wasn't trying to fix anything at the time - Isn't that always the way? I was listening to "George" radio, actually.
Now, all I have to do is to see whether a data file works.......
(It probably won"t!).?:|
Whooops, I was right - as soon as I put another disk in, the area mentioned above ("Play") in WMP was greyed out. :)
Back on the case, now.....;\

256824 2004-08-02 10:09:00 not to sure what you are trying to do here however......

harddrive should be on primary master and cd drive on secondary master (or slave).

you have no motherboard drivers installed which is proberly why DMA isn't enabled on the drives (which will make the pc as slow as) but there is also a bug with the live drivers that can cause it to.

>Click View > Show hidden devices,

win98 dosn't have this.

256825 2004-08-02 11:09:00 OK, Tweak'e,

First of, will try to download a suitable driver for my motherboard. Didn't pick that one up! No, I deliberatley disabled DMA on purpose in the BIOS.
Will enable it now.

>not to sure what you are trying to do here however.....

Trying to make CD ROM work.

Did you identify a bug?

256826 2004-08-02 11:44:00 i assume you have win98se ???

check if you have SB16 emulation in device manger. disale it or use "lpt shareing" setting.

also install adaptec aspi driver, it looks like you have the old ver installed.

is the cd rom reading any cd's ?
have you tried it in another pc ?
tweak'e (174)
256827 2004-08-02 12:51:00 1. Yes, Win 98SE
2. No, system not as slow as
3. Downloaded and excecuted 7508736.exe
4. CD device still reported as not ready.
5. It has worked on this machine before. Therfore some CDs get read.
6.will try updating adaptec updated driver tomorrow or Wednesday when I have the time.
7.SB16 emulation in device manger. This is reported as not being installed.

I will NEVER give up.

Thanks for help.

256828 2004-08-03 01:25:00 i would boot into safe mode, remove everything from device manger. reboot, install motherboard drivers and then the other cards drivers.

also it may be a wise idea to remove any cd writing software before hand.

>I will NEVER give up.

thats what i like to hear ;-)

the other thing would be to try a floppy boot disk that has cd drivers on it and see if you can access the cd drive in DOS. if that fails you may have a hardware problem.
