256783 2004-07-30 21:28:00 Morning all.

Suffering the effects of too much bourbon last nite, so it seemed a good time to do something quiet like backing-up my PC for the first time...

This process I thought would suit me as it should be idiot-proof, but it appears I'm wrong.

I went to Accessories/System Tools/Backup and followed the Backup Wizard. I put a CD in and selected D drive and in the line below called it Backup 31 July 2004.

Nice, pushed next and got a pop-up screen:

---------------------------
Backup Utility
---------------------------
The backup file name could not be used.

"D:\Backup 31 July 2004.bkf"

Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access.

Huh????????? I'm the administrator, in fact others live in fear of death if they touch my PC!
I've tried various iterations of the file name, but nothing seems popular.

I thought this was meant to be easy????

Any help would be much appreciated. Now, where's the Eno....

Cheers
Tim

But all that has to be done is to save the backup on the HD, then copy it onto a CD / DVD. Right?

Yes and no. What happens if the backup file you create on the hard disk is too large to fit on the CD/DVD media? What happens if you don't have enough room on the hard drive to create a backup file?

You can of course copy individual files or folders or groups of folders to CD/DVD but this will not be a "backup" file with a .bkf extention.

It's a lot better than no copy though if your hard drive dies.

There are programs out there that will backup to CD media and even prompting for extra media if the first CD gets full.

256791 2004-07-31 06:44:00 Hi kbcad
I went to the site you gave a link for. BackUp MyPC (which seemed to be the least promoted of their "stable") gave an option "More info" - but when I clicked on it I got exactly the same screen again. When I looked at "Press Release" it was pretty impressive because it said how it had been recognised by PC World magazine for the third year in a row for the "World Class" award. That was all the info which was very disappointing. I was left wondering what the "World Class" award meant - does it mean that this program is the best ...or ...is it in the top 100 ?? Am i getting cynical (probably !). Just need to access greater and more diverse info than this before I would be convinced.
