| 257127 | 2004-08-05 09:09:00 | Yes, we do pay a lot more than the rest of the world, for example look here: www.asahi-net.or.jp Unlimited (upto) 47Mbit/s ADSL, including modem rental for JPY 4000 per month (= NZD 56 )...and the lowest speed plan you can get is 1.5 Mbit/s... The only reason for these superior service levels and pricing compared to NZ is the presence of competitors to NTT, and a government (now) being serious about guaranteeing competition... By the way I have Jetstream Starter through Orcon, which is very reliable, and always exceeds the specified 128 kbit/s, but of course the speed as such, at current pricelevels is pathetic. Full speed Jetstream is too risky for us with the $ 50 - $ 200 per excess GB, which is ridiculous if you realise that the cost of international bandwidth for the likes of Telecom is probably in the order of $2 to $5 per GB or even lower (see www.aardvark.co.nz)... |

| 257128 | 2004-08-05 11:54:00 | I read it .. the probe contract won by ICONZ, I really only have one issue with this: 15 bidders ... which can only make me think that for that many bidders to participate, and be confident in setting up and operating the service, there must be a HUGE payout or dividend. (high prices for the consumers AGAIN) The attitude of the Bandwidth Provider today is to "screw untill we squeal" price fixing is pretty obvious ;-) but we don't complain do we? Solution: Obviously unbundle the telecom loop and drive the price of broadband down with competition. Unfortunately telecom is NZ's largest company (which we DON'T own) that plus an irresponsable "control freak" government, I doubt you will see much more than good people having a go ... and not making it in the industry. 4 million people on an island with good satelite bandwidth available, a poor infrastructure, thanks to telecom's profit structure and Australian ventures.... Well I don't believe we will have broadband (the real stuff)here in New Zealand for at least 10 years. .. not when there is so much money to be made by not offering it to us ... Why develop something at a cheaper price when we "the market" will pay top dollar.. The answer: I still say is satelite... like a glimmer of hope perhaps ... but I want to see the price list first! |

| 257130 | 2004-08-07 06:10:00 | I know 128kb Jetsart aint broadband but the impending axing of said service has hastened my decision to make the move to cable. For an extra $14 or so per month we'll be getting 2MB downstream and 512kb up with 5GB cap. The speed will be nice especially as access to distro's, etc, may be going with JS games but, I still object to paying $10.95 per month for a crappy cable modem which requires me to purchase a router for the LAN or set up a box for that purpose (the latter being the upside). It's nice for me to be able to have the choice, unlike most in NZ, but it's still not much of a choice on the price front. I also question the motives of axing the 128kb service with no belief at all in Telecoms rationale, although I was going to make the move sooner or later I'd have preferred my terms. | 257135 | 2004-08-08 05:42:00 | Our street is full of black cable and I hooked into it last week. Terry P says he lives in the middle of a street which has cable at each end but cannot reach his place .. Ah well... ( Don't we adjust - it does not seem quite as lovely as it did on day 1, although the numbers are unchanged !) Yes Murray - costing $1 a day more than I was paying Paradise for dialup. T |
