256919 2004-08-01 07:48:00 thanks for that, but I've been using a CD-RW for the last few attempts for precisely the reason you specified. When I started the thread, the drive wouldn't erase the CD-RW, but since then, I have progressed to the point of where it did erase-now I'm trying to record on it and still getting same issues. will keep trying,

cheers

256920 2004-08-01 23:55:00 searched for the dll's referred to, and there are still files named that present on the hard drive. Unfortunately the paucity of detail provided by the error message earlier detailed (as can be seen) doesn't give any indication of whether there is in fact a problem with these dll's or anything so convenient-all that is certain is that they are "mentioned in dispatches". One thought that I have had-maybe others can enlighten me on this if I'm on wrong track-these dll's appear to be components of the cd-burning program (Sonic)-is the fact that they are mentioned an indication of the fact that those components are not, for hardware reasons, able to do their job, as it were ? i.e. to put it more clearly, are these dll's components that should interact with the hardware to perform the burn, but because of a hardware issue with the burner itself, are not able to interact with the burner to perform a successful burn, and are therefore being displayed as being the area where the problem appears to be occurring ? whew, better stop there-I'm starting to confuse myself !!!:^O

as usual, awaiting enlightenment

cheers

256921 2004-08-02 00:14:00 Have you tryed different burning software? Alcohol 120% is really good, Nero 6 isnt bad either. Pete O'Neil (250)
256922 2004-08-02 00:28:00 have tried Ashampoo CD recording suite (got it on a cover CD somewhere)-didn't like it either. Sonic used to work just fine and dandy-now doesn't. may try Alcohol (can you point me to a download ?)-if still issues, would tend, to me, to indicate even more strongly that there is a hardware issue and not a software one.

256925 2004-08-02 22:55:00 latest instalment:

attempted to burn a CD from good old Windows Media Player-stiil didn't like it. have run diagnostics, including what was supplied with PC-these show no problems, but don't appear to be running any write tests. anybody know of any good free/shareware for testing this function? Mayl help me in presenting case for replacement if I can show as wide a range as possible of tests having been performed. Have consulted websites as referred to in earlier posts, but these, in spite of initially appearig promising, led nowhere.

256926 2004-08-02 23:13:00 Does your CD burning software have write speed test and data integrity checking?

If any of the programs I have tried do include this functionality, I sure as heck can't see where it is-it's not labelled in terms as clear as what you state, anyway.

Latest news-have contacted Dell, and apparently a new CD-RW drive is on way, without even having to get unpleasant about it !

Let's just hope it was the drive itself that was the issue !;\
