257517 2004-08-02 06:14:00 Hello i am a very amateur computer user.
AVG recently detected a "Trojan Horse Dailer.9.n" i was about to format my computer anyway so that was alright.

However i have Jetstream and i was wondering if a dialer can cause trouble, as in knock up a large phone bill? I was of the understanding that jetsteam runs on a different phone line so a dialer would not be able to operate, am i correct?

Thank You For Your Time.

257518 2004-08-02 06:27:00 If you are on Jetstream and don't have a dial up modem installed and/or connected to a phone line, then a Trojan Dialler won't bother you.

However, the existence of the dialler program in your system should be looked at, get rid of it if you can, even if it is unlikely to mean extra phone bills.

I am still not sure of what you mean when you say connected to a phone line.

I dont have a modem installed on my pc, my jeststream modem is internal. However my modem is connected to a double plug - one is connected to my modem and the other is connected to another double plug which is connected to my phone and my caller id. I hope you can understand that but, do i potenially have a problem with the dialer?

257521 2004-08-02 07:18:00 I am more concerned wether the Dialer will actually work on my jetstream even though my adsl modem is connected to a double plug with a telephone.

Please help me, anyone?

257522 2004-08-02 07:20:00 it should be gone but Pheonix's advice is good. just be aware that while running an unpatched system you could get infected very easly. tweak'e (174)
257523 2004-08-02 07:24:00 When the dialer was on my computer could it have infected my phone line and made toll calls (or what eva it does)??? whitts (5961)

no. for a dailer to work you need to have a dailup modem installed and connected to a phone line. 0900 numbers don't work over ADSL :)

257526 2004-08-02 07:27:00 Sorry about the 2nd post - thank you very much, my mind is much more at ease. Now what are the best methods to stop an infection like the dialer again? whitts (5961)
