257271 2004-08-01 14:57:00 For those who don't get it automatically-
Went into my update site to check History to reply to another thread.
Found this brand new security update:
MS Security Bulletin MS04-025.
*This is a Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (KB867801) issued July 31 Updated 1 August . Version 2.0.
Apply immediately.
2.8MB. 9 minutes* (I'm on Dialup)

I changed from Firefox to IE to download it.
Just as I clicked the Setup button, I got an AVG warning window.
As I've never had one before, I goggled - and then it vanished.
Ran AVG since with no results, but interested to know if anyone else got the same results - and why?

257272 2004-08-01 20:56:00 Hi Laura,

Its funny you mention AVG in connection with a Windows Update.
I updated KB867801 yesterday and everything went ok, but not long after when I went to do an AVG update it wouldn't let me do it and gave following message :
<< please manually establish a connection to download your update files. This can be typically done by launching your browser.>>

I have never had this problem before. I was already connected to the internet. Tried disconnecting then connecting again but it still wouldn't work, so gave up and decided to try again later.
I had followed the same way of getting the update as I have always done and never had a problem.

Later on in the day when I turned the computer back on, AVG worked normally again. PS. I did do a restart after downloading windows update so that wasn't the problem.

Maybe there is nothing to worry about in your case, and AVG is just sensitive to the download.

257273 2004-08-01 22:08:00 I downloaded and installed this update on my XP machine on 31 July. I checked the history soon after and it said it had installed successfully. I ran Windows Update again just to check there was nothing else and there wasn't. The update was also listed in Add/Remove programs.

Anyway this morning (2 August) Windows update wanted to install the file again. Before doing so I manually scanned from the Windows Update page and sure enough it was showing it needed to be downloaded. So I downloaded and installed for a second time.

Has anyone else encountered this? By the way the Windows Update page is now V5, not V4. I am not aware of changing it - must have been in a critical update recently. The other thing that puzzles me is that two other computers in the house (Windows 98 and XP Home) are still V4. The computer mentioned above is XP Prof. So perhaps it is the V5 page at fault.

I'm running WinXP Pro as well .

This may be why AVG gave me the message " to manually establish a connection to download your update files [this can typically be done by launching your browser] "

Maybe it affects AVGs current connection somehow . It would also explain why original poster had AVG post a warning .

257275 2004-08-02 04:36:00 yes, I downloaded this update this morning, and seeing your problem thought I would update AVG to see what happened. Big AVG update 2700kb although I update every couple of days, but it all installed and ran as normal. Haven't had any strange reports. I am about to do a full system scan with AVG. I'll get back to you. theother1 (3573)

Just a guess, but I'm wondering whether M/S actually did an update on an update - 1 day later..?
I found the words *issued July 31 Updated 1 August* a bit puzzling when I saw them. And you seem to have been a real early bird, bearing in mind the time difference (Well, I often find other programe updates are a day behind our time, even when I believe I've got them promply - so assume they're using the date in the country of origin? )
I've no idea whether Microsoft works that way, but maybe you were so quick off the mark on July 31 that you needed an extra fix - while we slower types got only the new version they whipped up shortly after?
Just a thought...

BTW My AVG has provided me with no more scares, so the one weirdness seems to have been an anomaly.

257277 2004-08-02 11:39:00 After reading this thread went to Windows update. Downloaded 2.8 Meg as you say. "Critical update"

Rebooted and back here.

I don't use AVG so no problems. I just go to the Microsoft site every so often and download and install what I want. There are still 4 updates and one driver I haven't installed yet and I have no intention of doing so at this point in time.
