| 257385 | 2004-08-03 23:10:00 | hmmm.....im in 2 minds about updates,I pretty much turn then on when servicing someone elses machine so that would be my "professional" stance on the matter, keeping in mind that these people will have limited knowledge and probally not even understand that Internet Explorer is a browser and not the internet itself. For my own comps,My desktop has never had the updates, but i did load up SP1,Constant downloads going in the background on 56k is bulls**t, And to date no security problems. My laptop on the otherhand......In my eagerness to get it out of the box and on the net i didn't even turn on the MS firewall.....BOOOMFAAA.......hit with a good 4 viruses immediatly.Spent a number of hours cleaning her all out and took it home......where i plugged it into the phone line (new connection)....once again forgetting to turn on the MS firewall......BOOMFAA......another pus infected payload of viruses took up residence. The laptop now gets all updates as they come, but i am getting sick to death of them and once sp2 final is released that will be the last it ever gets. Also,I believe MS should be doing more then what they have done,All this is their doing and they should contract technician's to service every comp running a registered copy of XP.Even as a one off to update there software to SP2. |

| 257389 | 2004-08-04 12:51:00 | I can not understand people who say that "Linux never needs updating!" If this were the case, Linux would come in one version. As it is we have dozens of different versions of Linux coming out all the time. The whole system is updated. Others say that Linux is free of Virus etc. The only reason is that the hackers & virus writers do not consider Linux to be a worthwhile target yet. This will change as Linux gains popularity, which isn't too far off. Xandros is getting very close to the quality of XP. In a couple of years it should be very good, just needs some decent software :) |

| 257390 | 2004-08-04 12:59:00 | Thats right,no updating for linux, instead they download a new kernal and recomplie the OS,then download the new release that comes with the new kernal, all 48 cd's of em,all the while mocking MS and its monthly updates And whats to bet that the majority of virus writers are Linux heads? |
