257527 2004-08-02 07:27:00 As far as I know, your ADSL modem doesn't 'dial' in the same sense that a 56k modem or telephone does. Therefore, it *shouldn't* dial out using your phone line.

If you also had a 56k internal modem installed for dial up internet or fax capability you may then have cause for concern.

I did have one, however that was removed when my Adsl modem was installed, so that should be ok, yes?

257531 2004-08-02 08:31:00 Hang on a minute I am confused here.WE were on a 56modem, now on jetstream, Speedtouch router.
The modem is still inside the computer. part of the motherboard??. The phone line is NOT plugged into the computer but into the router instead.
I assume this means the "baddie dialer" will not work on this m/c, right??
Thanks. PJ

correct.

for keeping them off your pc, keep windows (and office) updates uptodate, keep your antivirus uptodate, use a correctly configured firewall, and most of all use comman sence ! "click here for free *****" is not always a good idea.

also useing a non-MS browser helps to :)

257533 2004-08-02 10:07:00 You can avoid a lot by using another browser such as Firefox or Opera.
If you dont, then you require a minimum of a firewall and Antivirus and wise to utilise SpywareBlaster (www.majorgeeks.com) to create and "innocultion" to a lot of hijacks and spyware. Also run Adaware and Spybot every now and again to search and clean.

And most importantly, read those popups/require this plugin carefully and if unsure, reject it. Often this is the way trojans and diallers get installed. Some site that you visit tells you that you require this "whatever" and it gives you a trojan or dialler.

Thanks for the reassurance. PJ
