257375 2004-08-02 03:50:00 Security patches etc. are not absolutely necessary. They are an added protection for your system.I've been keeping mine up to date, but I don't think they have ever done anything for me. But you never know!!!

257376 2004-08-02 04:06:00 >t's like they are the be all and end all security fix for newbies

>Zone-Alarm will not stand up to any real intrusion (port scans, thats about it), for that you need a hardware firewall with NAT and proper IDS coupled with a decent software package

no newbie will even know what your talking about let alone go to the $$ of installing other equipment.

nothing pissis me off more than IT pro's attitude of "its not worth having any sicurity if you can't have the best/pro setup".

even with free tools they can stop 99% of the crud. even IT pro's can't stop 100% of it so newbies aren't doing to badly ;-)
at least AVG free and ZA free are better than nothing.

opera, firefox, mozilla are not immune to adware/malware/spyware. spyware dosn't need a browser hence its a good idea to have a spyware removal tool such as adaware/spybot.....both of which are free. strange how the paid spyware tools have only come onto the market a long time after the free ones ! !

also as far as patching goes, even tho you may not use IE etc you those exploits can still be exploited. i had one server pc infected without it ever going to the infected site (and it was a browser exploit not a network exploit).

the "you need antivirus firewall and spyware program advice" was going long before MSblaster was even thought of.

257378 2004-08-02 06:22:00 reckon it is better to use AVG & Zone alarm and update them often (daily, think of them as vitamin C for your computer) than to pay $40/year for one of the others and think that you are protected for the year when you are not.
By setting the upgrade schedulerto upgrade daily at least you are getting the protection as soon as it is available. I have been running these two for 2 years and have only had one virus sneak through and it was found the next day. So there!

257380 2004-08-02 10:19:00 To those who have replied so far, thanks .

I will consider downloading from the website directly, and save me a lot of time .

Have also ordered a CD with patches on it; am not sure if the MS website was properly working - time will tell if the CD arrives or not!

257381 2004-08-02 11:59:00 I got one of those CD's from Microsoft recently. Comes with SP1 for XP and other updates. Since applying I have got other updates. One as recently as tonight even.

I just try to keep everything up to date but don't check on a daily basis apart from virus defs. I do have a firewall installed but only since I went broadband with an always on connection. I did not need a firewall before that and have never been infected with a virus via a dial up modem.

Got one years ago by leaving a floppy disk with data from my Boss in the drive and rebooted.

257382 2004-08-03 12:39:00 I tend to believe in the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
I have two computers one has XP Pro & the other XP Home, they have been on XP since it first hit the market. (There were some cheap ones as an introduction/promotion at the time).
The XP Home has not had any update & has never given any trouble.
The XP Pro has SP1 because my ADSL modem required it, it has never missed a beat either. The auto update is disabled on both.
I use Zone Alarm, Anti-Vir, & Adaware 6.

SP2 has nothing which I wan't so I certainly will not be bloating my systems with it.
There is a little program called "XP Anti Spy" which eliminates most of the security sensitive items, also gets rid of those balloons and bossy messages.

257383 2004-08-03 14:01:00 Kiki: Amen brother!

I say don't sign up to get that cd posted to you <hamstar>cos then they know where you are... THEY KNOW WHERE YOU ARE I SAY!</hamstar>

Lol... all that service pack and patch stuff is just propaganda... who knows whats in them but it can't help if, as said in many pc magazines, its just a patch for a patch for a patch....

I use win2kpro and I have sp3 installed simply because systemworks wanted it. I also installed the msblaster fix simply because I was tired of nortons coming up telling me how it had just nuked msblaster.

I also have adaware 6, zonealarm pro 4.something, and I use open source browsers wherever I can (curse ms wanted the internet to be an ms internet)

Hey, I've survived on just them. My PC's slick as a... something thats slick.

I survived 98se with no patches watsoever. So I say the patches are a load of blahoey! I ain't ever, to my knowledge been hacked, had a virus running rampant, or anything. And I say that without touching wood.

I feel secure without the stoopid patches. Theres no chance they're going to be optimising the code. You bought the product. Microsoft have your money. They'd have to spend a bit to make optimisation patches. But they just make 'security' patches so all you buffoons on xp feel 'more secure'

:^OWhat a load of bs!:^O

257384 2004-08-03 15:33:00 An interesting post from an obviously young person, who has made 120 in the past 3 months.
So he is either a passionate enthusiast- though misguided about updates - or taking the mickey.
(Those mystified by references to hamstar may be enlightened by this PF1 post - if they have time to spare & can be bothered searching:
