tv sockets of tv's (i assme videos as well) are alive at mains voltage (or is it half mains ?? ) so having 240 volts tickle your fingers is so much fun. (my hand still hurts from the last one). tho they do have caps to limit the current but they do go faulty from time to time ;-)

257356 2004-08-02 05:17:00 My eyes are starting to glaze... :p

I tried unplugging the aerial - no change.
I tried disconnecting all the inputs - no change.

I did find this though: there is a ribbon cable that connects all the components on the Kenwood, and if I touch that, sometimes the buzz/hum stops. I tried reseating all the connections, but it didn't stop it permanently. Does this point to an issue with the ribbon cable?

This is almost as interesting as finding out why Windows has stopped working!

Depends on the model tweak'e. The problem is live chassis power supplies, and some antenna sockets have zero volts, some have half mains plus dc, and some have more. It all depends on the designers, and I have an 37cm Sharp that has no volts whatsoever on the antenna socket.

Video recorders don't use the same live chassis techniques so their antenna sockets are not live. Having said that, somebody will now point me at a yamakazi el-cheapo that will make your hair stand on end!

The caps aren't there to limit the current, they are intended to provide signal earthing continuity and it depends on their impedance at 50-100Hz as to what sort of shock you get.
