257406 2004-08-02 03:33:00 Just set up a network (VPN) and I can see the other computer when I go into "My network places\computers near me", trouble is when I try to access the other computer it says

Enter Network Password

Incorrect password or unknown user name for

\\mainpc

Connect as:

Password:

and wants me to enter my computer name, and the password. The thing is, I haven't set any passwords for the network.
How do I stop it from asking for a password and just let me access the remote machine?

257407 2004-08-03 04:47:00 I haven't played with VPNs, but I suspect that they would make it difficut to do away with passwords. The "P" stands for "Private". :D

My guess is that making a user/password on each machine (with the username and password the same on both) would make it work.

Let's see if anyone else will contribute some knowledge, rather than a guess. :D

257410 2004-08-03 05:47:00 Graham and ilikelinux are partly right, you need a user account on the VPN server machine that is the same as yours, also the Guest account enabled.

If using XP Pro, it has a screwed up setting in the Group Policy Editor (Start->Run->gpedit.msc) that disables Guest access to the machine from the network. You need to find that in the tree and remove Guest from the list.

Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> User Rights Assignment

Then look for 'Deny access to this computer from the network' and remove the Guest entry.

257411 2004-08-03 09:38:00 This same problem usually occurs on a LAN where you run windows XP on the computer you are using to connect (the local PC). you should enter:

Connect as user: the username on the remote pc you want to login as
Password: whatever the p/w is for that account

XP pro has a 'remember this' box to stop windows ever asking you this again, however microsoft has disabled this box in the home edition 'so helpfully' for the home-users-who-are-most-likely-to-need-it. (Why would you ever run XP home?) If you are running another OS on your local box, then you need to create an account on it that is identical to the remote account and use that. It doesn't seem to matter what version of windows the remote machine runs.
