257398 2004-08-02 03:27:00 I've been a fool. I disabled the RPC in 'Services' on my WinXP SP1 home PC and now - you guessed it - I have all sorts of problems. The one I need an answer for is: How do I enable it again??? without a rebuild.
The properties tab etc. won't open up. Enable (in fact all) options are greyed out.
And so all the dependincy services are stopped including recovery options.
I know - I should be shot! - anyone with an answer? I've tried everything I can think of.

257399 2004-08-02 06:10:00 Click Start, Run, regedit, OK.
Go to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/RpcSs

Select the registry value which says "start" and change the value to 2. Restart the PC.

257400 2004-08-02 07:01:00 You could also try:

Start --> Run --> services.msc

Then find the one you want and start / enable it.

257401 2004-08-02 23:07:00 Tried that - still no joy.
At least the 'start' option is available now - but now I get the message that other devices aren't attached and so can't start.
Still can't get into proprties to enable it.

It sounds like you are still trying to get in through the services screen. Have you tried the following suggestion?

> Click Start, Run, regedit, OK.
> Go to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/RcSs
> Select the registry value which says "start" and change the value to 2.
> Restart the PC.

257403 2004-08-03 00:04:00 Have a look at this (www.blackviper.com) then this (www.blackviper.com). If you want to disable services use the Black Viper XP guide (www.blackviper.com).

257404 2004-08-03 01:28:00 Yes I tried the registry key given in earlier email to = 2 & rebooted. It set the RPC = Auto and the start option was now not greyed out however it will still not start.
Also there is nothing displayed on the 'Extended Services' screen. (that disappeared after the RPC was disabled originally).

257405 2004-08-03 01:39:00 It's not guarranteed to work. Back up your data and try a reinstall over the top of your current setup. You can slipstream service packs and hotfixes with you Windows CD to save having to download them, search the forum for sliptreaming.
