257807 2004-08-03 03:35:00 Greetings,

Ive got a Clevo D430e Laptop. Comes with 3x USB2.0 Ports.
Ive got an External 120GB Hard Drive and Ive just got myself a Bay for my DVD+/-RW Drive. My TV-Tuner (MSI Vox) is also USB2.0

Basically everything is running really slowly in Windows XP :-( Ive got WinXP on here because I dont have drivers for Gentoo for my TV Tuner Card.

If anybody could help me, basically all its saying is that it couldnt initialize the driver? The Windows Help comes up blank.
WinXP SP1

Cheers

257808 2004-08-03 04:51:00 Power on device, plug it in.

Plug device in, power it up.

Start computer with device plugged in, powered up.

Start computer with device plugged in, powered down.

That seems to cover the ways you can try.

USB will work consistently about a year after it is declared obsolete. ]:)

257809 2004-08-03 05:46:00 Its not the device - All the devices work at USB 1.1 speed....

Its the actual Hub itself that wont initialize the high-speed USB2 controller so its defaulting back to USB1 :-(

257810 2004-08-03 05:56:00 Are you sure the cables are rated for 2.0? They seem to be very fussy. Graham L (2)
257811 2004-08-03 08:58:00 Yes

As I said - Its the controller....
Checked Clevo.com.tw for drivers but no luck - they're for Win2k and wont install.

257812 2004-08-03 12:01:00 This is the onboard ports your using not an add-on hub, yes?

Not an Ali chipset is it (Acer Labs), I had trouble with a five port pci add-in USB 2.0 card recently which has an Ali chip, I suspected the chipset or lack of decent drivers for it with Win2k. My onboard 1.1 was faster, when it came to transfering anything much more than 500 or 600K it chocked completely or stalled while it thought about. Blimmin awfull thing to uninstall as well.

Haven't resolved my issue yet except for pulling it out. Will keep you posted tho.

257813 2004-08-03 12:47:00 Yes, its the Onboard ports. Windows calls it a Hub.

I cant exactly pull these out. I could disable it in the BIOS but its a pain in the ass coz I can use my External stuff fine in Linux :-(

*Chill goes off to bed muttering and cursing windows for its lack of hardware support.......

So find a version of Linux and the drivers you need for the version of Linux you decide to install on whatever hardware you use.

I don't use Linux any more as I can't find support for a wireless adapter I use to access the internet. I am not about to reinstall my external modem here although I know it will work under Mandrake 9.1

I have no problems with the computer trying to dial out.

Just use WindowsXP but in your opinion slow.
