2004-08-02 22:47:00 | Hi, This is the second attempt to ask this question - the other disappeared :-(, if it shows up sorry ! :-( Recently I had cause to re install XP in my larger h/d because of a corrupted file, apparently- which proved quite successful. I then re installed Office 2003 and Pretty Good Solitaire- which for sometime past I had been barred from re downloading and running what was described as a "30 day trial"only Because of the XP re install creating a "virgin" h/d -(this purged the info re my previous usuage) and I was able to re install P G S from off my smaller h/d I where I had it stored in the "my documents" in that drive as a back up. Now when I double click the P G S icon, I start a " install office 2003 - windows installer" - when in fact, Office is fully installed , updated and running as normal. After a lot of "cancelling" etc I can get PG S working. I assume in mechanical terms I have short circuited the "office" and "PGS" programs- so how can I get past this? effie c

2004-08-03 08:21:00 | Certainly nothing like the info I was after: Do you have a shortcut on the desktop for this game? If so, I wanted to know what info you could see from right clicking the Icon on the Desktop . Not what is in the entire GoodSol directory on the hard drive, which appears to be what you have given . If that is indeed what the shortcut points to, I have no idea how that happened with a standard install . The shortcut that you use to launch the game should point to Goodsol . exe . Nothing else . If it does not do point to ONLY goodsol . exe, delete the shortcut on your desktop and create another from goodsol . exe in C:\Program Files\goodsol\goodsol . exe It looks like you are trying to "run" the pad_file . xml, which is launching Word and Word wants the Xml reader to be able to read the file, and therefore runs the installer so it can load the Xml reader filter . You do not want to run the Pad_file . xml file .

2004-08-04 05:22:00 | Hi G F Sorry I was a while in ansering ( have a meals on wheels run or three-:\ and that takes time. I ran a search for P G S exe- not a dicky bird- which defies logic as how else can th eprogram start- but there is nothing in either haed drive. Yes when I right click the PGS icon I get - only- th eentire program that I copied to you last night: I did a manual search and even in the "my documents" back up in E drive there is no exe icon Trust me and my luck - I don't know :-( O K as this is a "virgin " install I assume I will be allowed to download th ecorrect program and be able to play it for 30 days ( then if I want to be snarky I could re install XP all over again and get anothe rvirgin h/d-- not bloody likely - this one took two days of re installing all the programs( and this machine is loaded to say the least What Think you? Thanks either way- as usual you have been very very helpful effie c

2004-08-04 06:05:00 | Where do you get PGS.exe, from? Thats not a file that gets installed. Thats plainly a corrupt icon as well, so get rid of it. The file name you are looking for is: goodsol.exe It should be in C:\Program Files\Goodsol in a standard XP install Exactly as I suggested in my post - unless you did a custom install and told is to install somewhere else, in which case you would know where that is. So, again look for goodsol.exe Look first in C:\program files\goodsol assuming your system drive is C:, otherwise change as desired. You must be -exact- in spelling when searching, or the PC will never find the file. And its a very average program considering its a paid one (after the trial period) in my view. There are free ones I have seen that are just as good. I even went to the trouble of downloading and installing it to make sure that the above info is correct.

2004-08-05 21:52:00 | Hi, G F, You would not read about it ! I followed your specific advice- typed in the abbreviated name in search and sure enough found that exe file-- but even then it tried to re install Office. I therefore searched and deleted everything to do with P G S - redownloaded from scratch - and once again the program tried to do this re install Ignoring Metal's as usual inane cracks, I am dependant on you I am as usual tied up with "do gooder " chores so I will be erratic in my time frame to you - sorry. Any other things that I could look at? - it certainly has me intrigued- it is not crucial and I could ignore it and get on with life - but the challenge is there effie c

2004-08-05 22:02:00 | Well, I can't help beyond there sorry . If you have truly "deleted" everything, thats probably half the trouble . "Deleting" program files without correctly "uninstalling" them is not advisable, and should never be done unless you fully understand how the program installs and what registry keys are used . Somehow I doubt that you have that knowledge in regards to this program? You obviously have Office 2003, perhaps it really does want the Xml reader installed if Office actually exists? There is no easy way to find out, but why did you not play along and actually let the thing install the part of Office it thinks it needs . Its not likely to hurt anything . Perhaps your problem would go away then .
