257942 2004-08-03 17:26:00 Well as some of you may well know, Doom 3 became available in NZ yesterday.

I have to admit that the last time I played Doom was when it 1st came out... I think I had a Pentium 100, running Win95 with 16MB of RAM (SHE WAS A BEAST OF A MACHINE)

I installed Doom 3 and it took a while (3 discs) and in the end when I tried to run the game it came up with an error saying that I had to disable all CD/DVD emulation software and then restart the game.

It took me the best part of 45 minutes to figure out what the emulation software was... it turned out to be CloneCD... don't know why cos I de-selected the virtual clone drive option on install.

After CloneCD was removed the game went fine and I must say the game holds true to all the media and technical attention it received.

The graphics are out of this world, the environment awesomely spine chilling and down-right scary (even at 3pm in the afternoon), the music rocks too.... and I"m not exactly a Nine Inch Nails fan.

Has anyone experienced any problems with Doom 3 at all... just out of curiosity.

cheers

257943 2004-08-03 19:42:00 Wow sounds cool, what sort of machine are you running? 45 min install, must be a huge file!!!!!! miknz (3731)
257944 2004-08-03 20:06:00 Hey miknz,

The install didn't take long... bout 10 maybe 15 minutes (including swapping the CD's)

It took me 45 minutes to find out what CD/DVD emulation software I was running.

Incidently the game itself requires about 2.2GB of uncompressed hard drive space PLUS 400MB for the swap file.

The one thing I did notice was that it took quite a while to load... maybe about 3-4 minutes... but the initial wait was well worth it once I saw what it looked like. Once the game is running loading between missions is short and sweet.

It's not too bad considering what the game looks like... it really is one of those releases that was worth waiting for. I don't think any self-respecting Doom fan will be disappointed.

I suppose now all eyes will be on Half-life 2... it certainly has a lot to compete with in Doom 3.... of course between now and then there may be even more significant leaps in the graphics department that may give Valve the upper hand in the FPS genre, but if Doom 3 is anything to go by then I certainly do not think the gaming community will be disappointed when it is released.

BTW my machine specs are:

Intel P4 2.8Ghz Prescott
Asus P4P800-SE mobo
1GB DDR 400 (running in dual channel mode)
Seagate 120GB SATA hard drive
Gigabyte R96X128D (ATi Radeon 9600XT)
52x Samsung CDRW drive
16x Samsung DVD drive
8x Pioneer dual mode DVDRW drive
Windows XP Home SP1a

257950 2004-08-04 05:18:00 My settings were on medium quality most of the time but I run the game in high quality now.....I tried the ultra quality but it proved a bit too much for the old 9600XT... started noticing a drop in the framerate and the screen began to stutter as well.

I think the long load time may have something to do with the game's swap file. I have noticed that if I havn't run Doom for a while it takes time to load... conversely if I open it, play for about 30 miutess, close it then play it again say bout 15-20 minutes later it loads much faster.

This is pure speculation....

It could also be that the CD drive I'm using... which is the DVDRW... and thus is not the fastest of my optical drives... Come to think of it I havn't actually tried it in the other drives yet... I'll give that a go and see if it speeds up at all.
